Currently stranded in Austin due to not getting a rental because of an expired drivers license. Looks like I can get an UBER X at the airport but do they jack up the cost at airports. If I leave the terminal and walk down the road will it be cheaper??

Only if that city has fixed rates I'd imagine. Uber rates will tell you if they're surging.

You have to set your pick up spot and destination, then it will have a button for fare estimate.

A lot. Minimum $60 fare from MSY to anywhere in New Orleans (less for Metairie). A ride from the gas station across the street would cost at most $20.

Really loose use of the word stranded, wouldn't you say?

Some airports you aren't allowed to use uber as a pickup. You can be dropped off there though.

A ride originating from right across the street from the airport to somewhere else, not from the airport to the gas station.

This is pretty solid advice if you're only getting surge pricing at the airport.
