The San Francisco company has hired education technology entrepreneur Tom Hayes as general manager for its New Orleans operation. Hayes, in turn, said Wednesday that he is seeking to hire a marketing manager locally and driver operations manager who would coordinate with drivers and transportation companies participating in the Uber network.

Looks like this is going to be happening pretty soon.

That isn't true, at least in Los Angeles where I have used it dozens of times, but you do get one maybe one in every five rides. That doesn't even matter though, Uber is THE shite!

I don't know if drivers can select who they pick up based on pics/profiles, but these ladies claim to get picked up mostly by other chicks.

You don't get to pick. Sure, there are hot female drivers but less than half of the drivers are female and less than half of those would be considered hot.

When you order you do get to see the closest driver and what kind of car they have so I guess you could wait until a hot chick was around if you really wanted to?

I've used uber in both San Fran and in Los Angeles right now. When a driver rating drops below 4.6 (5 point scale) they can no longer drive for uber. The drivers rate their customers and can refuse to pick up riders with low scores. Cars are clean and have to be less than 7 years old. No cash is exchanged (paypal and credit card) and no tip is expected. An enjoyable, hassle-free, relatively inexpensive mode of travel. As expected, taxi unions are battling uber legally.

I don't know for a fact about the ranking system but I believe it and all of the rest is 100% true.

This seems like a good service and obviously it's getting big, but I definitely can see why independent cabbies and companies would be upset. In what way is this different from cabs and other car services and why should people be able to ignore established regulations to operate that type of business?

I have also heard that the Unions are going nuts on this in their efforts to keep customers in 15 year old nasty vehicles with non English speaking drivers. Does anyone know a recent status on that? How dare someone attempt to allow free enterprise to rule the marketplace.

You order from your phone using an app, you know exactly how long it will take before the car gets there, you can see where they are on the map when they are coming to get you, you know you are getting a nice car, you know the driver isn't gonna be trash, once you are picked up you can share your route with other people and they can see exactly where you are on your trip, you never need to pull out cash or a card, you never have to tip and most importantly it is WAY cheaper than cab with way better service all around. Those are only the ones off of the top of my head but its equal or better to a cab or driver service in every possible way.

Because the current regulations only favor the drivers, not the passengers. Also, Uber does a WAY better job of "regulating" drivers than any city or state could ever do. I use it for myself or guests at least 3-4 times a week and you can't really understand how much better it is until you start using it. Unless cities and states start cracking down Uber is gonna put cabs out of business.

ETA: I live in the middle of 3 hotels so I could always have a cab within 1 minute of walking out my front door if I wanted and I still always use Uber so the "convenience" of catching a cab is not an issue. I can always have an Uber at my door within 5 minutes, they call when they are outside, have a bottle of water ready for me or my guests and its just better! Plus its when you send a girl home in one versus a cab, and cheaper!

No hassle, no cash exchanged, no faulty meters. No bs fees for extra passengers. Uber tracks through gps and derives fare based on time and distance. Uber cars are clean and fairly new. System protects both the driver and rider. Fares are significantly cheaper than cabs. It's a customer satisfaction driven business.

Exactly. I have a driver I use if I need someone to drive me around town for 4-5 hours on a date or something but for any normal ride I just Uber.

They should be able to do it because of freedom of choice. Uber (Lyft as well) is a reputation based company so that customers can have the best experience possible when it comes to needing a ride. The drivers do go through background checks and cars are inspected, so they do make sure safety is a priority. Cab companies should be scared because it is competition but that is also why it is great for the consumer.

I get that it sounds great, I don't use cabs often when I'm home, but I will definitely try Uber when it gets here. All I'm saying for all practical purposes it's a car service and they are skating rules and expenses that legitimate car services have. Really is it any different than the permitted artists in Jackson square upset about the unpermitted artist in Jackson square. It can't be a free-for-all.

I wouldn't say "only" but favor the drivers is true. There are a bunch of new rules for cabs here, but I don't know if all of them are even being enforced yet.

I love Ze Ubah. Use it in Dallas whenever I'm there but I disagree with it being cheaper than cabs. I spent over $200 on it in one night just bar hopping

All I can say is just wait and see! If Uber there is anything like how it is in L.A. and Phoenix you are gonna be THRILLED!

How in the frick? You need to come clean because unless you went to 20-30 bars or drove like 100+ miles there is no way that is the case! Oh....unless you used Uber Black or something, everything I have said is based on Uber X which is what you always use if your company isn't picking up the tab.
