Per nbc off air alert at work. Don't have a link yet. Apparently they will release the soldiers soon. Will not detain them at all.

Washington (CNN)Ten American sailors are in Iranian custody after two small U.S. naval craft apparently briefly entered Iranian territorial waters, a U.S. senior defense official said Tuesday.

The official, however, expects the situation to be resolved quickly.

A senior administration official told CNN that the U.S. lost contact with the two ships, which were en route from Kuwait to Bahrain.

"We subsequently have been in communication with Iranian authorities, who have informed us of the safety and well-being of our personnel," the senior administration official said. "We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey."

The U.S. is uncertain whether the vessels, which were sailing near Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, intentionally entered Iranian waters, and the senior defense official said no distress call was made by the ships.

Secretary of State John Kerry called his Iranian counterpart to try to resolve the matter.

"We're aware. We're working on it and we hope to resolve the situation," Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told CNN.

Iranian representatives at the U.N. mission in New York had no comment.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island, situated in the middle of the Persian Gulf. They say it stemmed from some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats, causing them to run aground. The troops were picked up by Iran.

Well if we entered waters too close to the country, I totally get it.

Cause don't think for two seconds, we wouldn't send our whole fleet out if another country had their boats at our coast.

We always send fighters and boats out everytime a submarine gets close.

So I don't see why we thought it was cool to get that close

Iran's navy went cruising for a bruising.

edit: I retract my statement. This was an innocent incident... the OP apparently couldn't resist a sensationalist headline.

Iran rescues stranded US marines in malfunctioning ships which ran aground in their waters.

Your title is stupid and misleading.

From what's being reported, a ship or two broke down in Iranian waters, and the armed forces members aboard were taken in.

BBC is reporting that the accounts by both the Iranian Government and the US Government are inaccurate. The are reporting the Navy Boats were on routine surveillance and were caught in international waters but the Obama Administration refused to go after and soldiers instead opting for a diplomatic solution.

So we just happened to have two ships that both happened to break down at the same time in the same place? What are the odds of that They couldn't call the fleet to have someone pick them up or rescue them? I'm buying into the BBC story.
