I have family in new iberia. We used to go down there during the summers when my mom had to work because we could hang out with family and it was essentially free daycare. Last time we went down there was around 2003 or so.

I wanted to show my wife because, believe it or not, I had quite a few good memories there. Running around the neighborhood, going down to the corner store, figuring out whose house we were going to that particular day, etc. I remembered it like a dingier, maybe a little more dangerous mayberry.

This past year we took a drive down there when we were visiting home and I couldnt believe the state of that old neighborhood. It wasnt picturesque when we were little but it was lower middle class working folks who were neighborly. Maybe my memory is just failing me, which has happened often, but the deterioration of that neighborhood and new iberia as a whole was apparent.

Not really that relevant to the article, just a dear Facebook while I take my morning deuce.

That's been a problem for Smalltown, USA forever, yet most people don't shoot each other.

Re education camps showing nothing but old movies about hard work paying off would have saved these utes.

Nothing to do ? How about studying or reading one of MILLIONS of books available to enhance your life? How about a little maintenance around the house? There's ALWAYS something to do that doesn't cost money.

Here's an idea for a program that might fix the issue: stop making so many kids.

Wear a condom, pull out or maybe... mayyyyyyybe.... if you can't handle the responsibility of raising kids that won't grow up to shoot others then DON'T frick.

See how easy that was? I'll take my consultant's fee in gold coins, please.

NEW IBERIA, La. — Two mothers are mourning the loss of their two teenage boys after a shooting last night. Now, local leaders are working towards figuring out a solution to gun violence.

Police says the two young men were arguing on the 700 block of Rosalie Street in New Iberia before they shot and killed each other instantly

quote:
Local leaders, like City Councilwoman Deedy Johnson-Reid, says that one of the problems in New Iberia is the lack of programs for its youth.

“There’s not enough for the kids of New Iberia to do," said Johnson-Reid. "We’ve got to figure out the way to put some programs out here, so our kids have something else to do… another way to kind of handle their anger, teach them some discipline, so we don’t have this gun violence that’s happening way too often in the city.”

Someone needs to let Dee Dee know that every town, kid, person, has the same "programs" for youth that I did for my kid. It was ME, the Rusted Spoke after school program. Until the black community recognizes this, no matter how much money, sympathy, or attention the government gives them they will never get out from where they are. QUIT BLAMING everyone and everything else and start taking responsibility.

well....they were 16, so they are in school right mom?
basketball, football, baseball, soccer, track, tennis, as well as a slew of other academic clubs if homeboy sucks at sports that they could participate in all for free.

We have these libraries that we are forced to pay for with our taxes that supposedly have shite to do at them.

You could also maybe make sure your kids are in bed at a decent hour on a school night instead of running the streets.
You could also maybe be a part of their lives and talk to them about not looking up to piece of shite role models, and maybe guide them away from the kind of people, entertainment, and after school activities that would further perpetuate the thug life they seemed to look up to, you know, be a parent.

100%
"Two mothers are mourning...."
I would assume had fathers been involved, the article wouldn't have limited the mourning to the moms.
