We've got a baby coming in September, and we took a big vacation last year, so we decided on staying essentially local this year.

So, instead of burning my vacation time as I have in the past (one long weekend, one nearly 2wk vacation, and some time around the holidays), I've taken ONLY long weekends.

I took every Monday from June through August off...and I am loving this!

Every week is a short week, and Holiday's like July 4th, Memorial Day, and Labor Day make for a few extra-long weekends.

What's more, since I'm never away from work for more than 2-3 business days, I don't feel any pressure to check email and never fall behind.

We are mostly doing outdoor type things in Arky (Buffalo River, White River, etc).

Anyone else have a vacation strategy that's evolved over time?

I pretty much only take long weekend vacations, and I have no limit on vacation days.

It's just really hard for me to take more than a couple days at a time unless it's truly needed (illness, emergency, etc.).

If you're planning on doing any partying on the vacation then you should do it soon. After the seventh month, pregnant women really shouldn't be drinking.

I feel like we are the same person, also have a baby coming in September and went to Buffalo River this year

But cant do the three day weekend thing, I only get a week of paid time off for the baby and my overtime is calculated weekly (everything over 40 is time and a half) so its not advantageous for me to take every monday off.

Not to hijack this thread, but pregnant women shouldn't drink at all. The most vital developmental times are the 2-9 weeks.

Sorry, I should have clarified. Pregnant women should not drink in the first nine weeks or the last two months. (But mostly the last two months)

I know a lot of people that take a number of Fridays and Momdays around a weekend .. They create 5 four-day weekends a year and still have 5 days to wrap around holidays .. I would be bored being off for a solid week ..

3-4 day weekends are for relaxing around the house, a week off (9 days) you go somewhere like the beach, mountains, or Wally World.

Meh, I guess that why most senior level guys get more vacation time than laborers

ETA: I accrue 2 days vacation every month and I'm capped at 5 weeks, so I take 2 Monday's or Friday's off every month and stay at my 5 week max accrued. It's awesome.

a couple of my coworkers do this and just love it...

frankly, I can never get all of my vacation taken and end up losing a week or so every year, so I really should do something like this.

at the very least, I may take fridays before home games off this year...

I have trouble not wasting 4-5 days a year by taking half says on Fridays. Would like to take 2 full weeks (1 in summer other in the fall) then use 10 other days in a more useful way...around 3 day weekends, big home football game weekends etc

I work 36 hour weeks as a nurse that is considered full time(3 12 hour shifts a week). Every week is a short week for me. I can plan it just right and be off 8 days in a row...without using a single second of vacation time.

I ain't asking for the time off. I'm taking it because I'm the boss.

I'd probably put up with this from a few of my best employees but none of them have asked.

Lesson of the Day: If you don't ask, you don't (usually) get.
