I know kids that are 7 on travel teams

My kid does both on the same team.. best of both worlds IMO without some of the bullshite that arise from both.
I hate it but High School ball at the higher level is mostly determined by the time they get to 9th grade.. an unfortunate reality of today's world.

we played rec for several years...I still coach my younger son in rec...but the rec where I am at is pitiful for the kids as they get older...they were doing wheel pitch until 10, not allowing for kids to pitch until 11...we found that this was putting the kids in our area at a disadvantage and decided to go travel when they got basically past tee-ball and coach pitch...I assist on a 12u team for one son, and my other plays JV HS ball as a freshman...he played travel and only travel since 4th grade...my point is that travel makes for better competition and coaching....and reps...more practices and more games...we don't let it run our lives...we built it so we have 14-15 kids so we can still do tourneys if some can't make it...parents only pay if the kid plays...uniforms were done through sponsorship...it can be good if done right...rec ball sucks now...its just the way it is...
oh and about scouting my 15 year old freshman sees more college scouts at the 14/15u tourneys he plays than he does at his high school games...the scouts are looking at travel as well as school ball now...

I think many parents would prefer to have a more competitive league with better athletes but without the travel. Around here, that just isn't the case. I have a friend in Jacksonville and they have both a recreational league and a competitive league without travel starting from coaches pitch at 6 and it sounds like a great setup. The "everyone gets a trophy" crowd has a place to play and so do the kids who want to compete like we did when we were kids.

Oh crap?!? It's not like this anymore? WTF?

My personal thought is anything younger than 11 is too young for travel ball. But pitching machines up to age 10 is nuts.
And I know of several coach pitch travel ball teams.

Say brah, if you spent all this time and money on education it would be a better investment

there's nothing more annoying than seeing travel teams begging for money either by selling plates of food or raffle tickets to raise money to cover their parents' traveling expenses.
My son made a couple of allstar teams and we had to travel out of town a few times. All the parents paid their own way.

All I am hearing is speculation. One group pointing out they don't understand another group. Are there parents that go overboard with travel ball? Yes. Are their idiots that make suggestions and judgments without experience in a particular subject matter? Yes.
I suppose the rec leagues nowadays that give trophies to every single kid are the "in" thing to do, so I understand the jealousy of the kids that actually WIN. Great example for kids!!

Maybe travel ball is why we don't see too many American brothas playing baseball?
For many, travel ball is the private school of youth baseball.

Why would that aggravate you ? $7 plate of jambalaya?
That has value and I was going to spend the money on lunch anyways. I actually wish they'd do it more often.
I'd much rather that than a $20 can of popcorn, $10 box of cookies, or a frickin raffle.

I coach an 11U travel team, AMA.

My dad didn't put me in travel ball at the age of 10 so I could be the next Derek Jeter. He let me play because I loved the game, made a lot of life long friends, and travel ball is a lot more competitive than little league.
Stayed busy every summer until I was 18 playing baseball every where, not to mention it kept me out of trouble and in shape.

Ultimately, if the coach is just some stage dad looking to live vicariously through his kid- what's the point? The only benefit of travel ball is better coaching and competition.
These assholes have been after my kid since he was six and I refuse to turn my entire family into some traveling road show when our Dixie league coaches are just as outstanding. Besides, my kid loves playing baseball, basketball, and football and is not ready to concentrate on one sport. Lastly, his grades come first.
No need for travel anything at this point. And all those idiots who say you'll never play HS baseball without playing travel ball are just trying to make themselves feel better about dropping thousands on it.

quote:Don't say the kids don't have a "normal" life just because their weekend activities aren't the same as yours. We played rec ball but we travelled with All-stars, I can promise you my son had as much fun going on trips with the team on weekends as he had fishing or going to Archery shoots or staying home to mow the grass. Besides playing ball, you have 12-13 kids eating out, cutting up, swimming and etc. It's like a weekend party with sleepovers and all. Travel ball families are no different than the family that goes to the beach, fishing, hiking or RVing every weekend.
has decided he's gonna pursue a not very likely scholarship over actually having a "normal" childhood and just being a kid b

Don't they have travel tee ball and coach's pitch now? I seem to remember reading about that on here.
If so,

My son is 7 and I have turned down 2 travel ball invites since mid Feb. We went 14-0 last fall in this new league that sucked and now everyone thinks we're great.
My son is a decent little player and maybe the best player in our 8u league but these parents are delusional. When they ask me why he can't play I tell them he's not good enough and they say "well he's better than what we have now" and I simply say "probably so."
I played at a pretty high level, and my asst coach coached me in HS. We laugh at these guys bc they literally have no clue what competition is. Its a social club that they can talk about on facebook and get shirts made. Having kids who literally need to learn how to catch playing travel ball is a joke.
Oh, and I didn't have the heart to tell them my main reason was my family wasn't going and staying out of town with this group of maniacs.

Amen! The whole "travel ball = best shot at making a high school team" is just a way to help you swallow that bill you pay each year to play baseball. I know, I did it with my boy for 6 years and if I could go back we would have stayed rec and left travel alone. I didn't realize the grip it had on my family and how much we missed out on until I finally pulled the plug on it. We made some amazing friends and had fun, but my kid would be the same player either way. We are back in rec ball and trying to better the league. We put together a coaches clinic with a college coach this year. Hoping people in our area will start getting back into the rec league like we did.
