Criminal defense lawyers are by far the trashiest.

I'm in law school right now and want to end up in the Defense world. It's not about getting your client off, but rather protecting his, and societies, rights from the government. The fact is that if your client is guilty as sin and the police/prosecution did their jobs correctly, then the best your going to do is plead him out. I don't care how guilty somebody is, it's not worth sending one person to prison if it means compromising our constitutional rights as a society. That is a very slippery slope and if not for defense attorneys, we as a society would not enjoy the rights we have because they would mean nothing if their was not somebody there to protect them.

The fact is that you need prosecutors to enforce the laws of this country, but you also need defense attorneys to ensure that justice is appropriately with respect to rights that every citizen is afforded in this country.

wonder how long it will take you to get those ideals out of your system

BTW: start out on the prosecution side to be a successful defense atty., it's not what you know...

That's exactly my intention. Prosecution is the quickest way to a court room. Well that and public defense. My plan is to be an ADA for a few years, get the experience and when the right opportunity presents itself move into private defense work.

And also I never intend to compromise on my ideals. Your education and integrity are the only two things in this world that no one can take from you. At the end of the day, no matter what I do, I know if I maintain my integrity and morals I'll sleep well at night.

Ambulance chasers by a wide margin and then there is a huge gap between them and every other kind of attorney.

Good advice. I'm interning at a public defenders office in a very large district this summer, so I hope to get the ball rolling in the networking department. Next summer I play to intern for the DA's office in the same district, and then hopefully land a job. I'm hoping considering where I'm ranked in my class it shouldn't be hard considering all the other people around my rank are going for the big firm/money jobs where they will be an associate with required billable hours done by briefs all day. Not my cup of tea.

Talked to an older guy who is now an ADA and has a private practice, but he started in criminal defense when he first got out.

He said he looked at it as him playing a role in the system guaranteed by the Constitution. He didn't do it because he liked his clients; he did it because he liked that our system guaranteed everyone a fair shake and he was a cog in that.

Now granted, he only did it for a few years before he burned out and moved in to other areas of law, but he said that was his rationale while he was doing it.

He told himself that just so that he could sleep at night, nothing more.

You'll think its adorable when/if you ever find yourself in a position to need one. Also, I would love for you to explain to me how that is a false statement. Do you honestly think prosectors would play by the rules if not for defense attorneys?

Well, okay. And they are pretty sleazy in a reptilian sort of way--at least the best ones are. But God bless 'em, they saved my arse once or twice!

Your idealism is apparent and sweet, but come back to us after you spent a few years defending the untermenschen of society, and tell us if you still believe.

Nah, I don't do any crim law, and I like defense lawyers. It's just that law schools must be handing out mighty tall soapboxes these days. It's easy to be self-righteous when Sallie Mae is picking up the rent, but come back here when she's ready to get reimbursed.

Go ahead and start learning the phrase, "So, did you have UM coverage as well?"

I'm not above admitting that my outlook on life can change. That's natural with life experiences, but I'm not making my claims based on ideal read out of a con law book or ethics class. I do have experience in the justice system, albeit limited in comparison to a person with a solid career in the area. Believe it or not not all attorneys are morally bankrupt. I know several that practice defense simply for the money, but on the other hand I know several that truly believe in the ideals that I have stated.
