Although it was likely drug money, that's screwed up.

He said no to a search, so they got the K9. The K9 hit on illegal narcotics, so they searched. No narcotics. The trainers can obviously make their K9 "hit" on anything.

Meanwhile, 41 year old Houston resident Fredrick Brown is really confused because he had 1.2 million in the truck.

Could've at least posted the story. Is action news 17 something new?

quote:

ROBERT---Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that on May 26, 2015, two interstate travelers were detained pending investigation after a traffic stop led to the discovery of approximately $800,000.00 of US Currency.

Around 11:00 p.m., TPSO Sgt. Tommy Ferrand was stationed roadside on I-12 near Robert conducting radar surveillance for possible speeders when he identified a white F-150 traveling westbound 12 miles per hour over the indicated speed limit. At this time, Sgt. Ferrand initiated a traffic stop and came in contact with 41 year old Houston resident Frederick Brown. Upon contact, Brown stated that he was headed west through Tangipahoa Parish after working in Mississippi. While conducting the roadside investigation, Ferrand also came in contact with Brown’s passenger, 38 year old Tigress Brown. While speaking to Sgt. Ferrand, the female passenger relayed a conflicting story regarding the couples stay in Mississippi.

While completing the speeding citation and with suspicion heighten, Sgt. Ferrand asked Brown if he could perform a search of the vehicle. Brown responded that even though he had nothing illegal in the vehicle, he could not. With the assistance of additional TPSO deputies and the Hammond Police Department, Sgt. Ferrand proceeded to conduct a free air sweep around the F-150 with the use of TPSO K9 MAKO. While conducting the free air sweep of the F-150, TPSO K9 MAKO, positively alerted two times in the same area indicating the strong possibility that illegal narcotics were present. As part of the investigation, a search was conducted that resulted in the seizure of over an expected $800,000.00 in cash currency.

At this time, the investigation is currently on-going and there are no additional details to report.

It's almost like trained animals can be trained to respond on command.

Supreme Court has ruled that police are free to allow police dogs to smell around the car and do not have to have a warrant or permission to search to do so. Possible that they do not have to have probable cause either. Not sure though.

The driver's passenger gave a conflicting story, which initiated the search. Get your story right if you're going have $800k in drug money in your vehicle. But hey this is a cop bashing thread. Who cares about the drug dealers?

Is the photo-op necessary?

Not as bad as the Kenner cops preening for the camera with 1 pot plant taken from the closet of a 16 year kid.

I don't give a flying frick what their story was, or whether they had a story at all. Civil asset forfeiture is a racket that would make Tony Soprano blush. Citizens should be able to travel with as much cash as they want, for any reason or no reason, and it should be nobody's damn business. If you want to bust them for drugs, bust them for drugs, if they're carrying any and you can find it. Cash is not a controlled substance-or shouldn't be.

SCOTUS also said cops can't make someone wait for a drug dog unless there's good reason

So, are cops training dogs to alert to the smell of cash now? Did you know that dogs falsely alert more than they positively alert? Likely due to cops just making shite up.

Oh, and it's the "if you don't like it, move" type conservatives that allow this type of local podunk abuse of freedoms to happen.

This isn't some case of a business owner wrongfully having money take from him. Find a better example to complain about. It makes it impossible to take you seriously when you're whining about drug dealers getting $800k in cash taken from them when they were arrested while crossing state lines.
