New Jersey officers smashed the window of a hot van and saved a screaming, sweating child who had been left there as her clueless mom went grocery shopping Thursday afternoon.
“Where are the parents?” Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Rich Carrion bellows after his parking lot rescue outside a Costco in Hackensack, as seen in cell phone video posted on Facebook by witness Rafael Rodriguez.
Someone in a concerned crowd tells him the mother is inside shopping.
“What are you, kidding me?” the officer says.
After Carrion broke the window, Officer Sonya Beiker climbed into the van and pulled out the little girl, WABC reported.
Bergen County Sheriff's Officer Rich Carrion smashed the van's window with his baton and demanded to know where the girl's parents were after rescuing her.
Here, he walks away as another sheriff's officer goes in to pick up and comfort the girl.
Less than a minute after the officers started running the van’s license plates, the mother, Chaeyoung Lim-Kim, finally returned with another child — and a shopping cart stuffed with groceries.
She said “Sorry” upon learning of her near-fatal mistake, but the officers wouldn’t have it, yelling to her: “No sorry. She could have died!”
An officer then refuses to let the mom hold her child, as the girl starts crying again.
Police estimated it was at least 80 degrees inside the van, according to NJ.com.
The mother was charged with child endangerment.
The toddler was treated at a hospital and released into her father's custody.
Rodriguez, the witness, told WABC the woman left all of the car’s windows cracked open — making him think she wasn't just absent-minded.
“I believe this is not the first time that she’s done this,” Rafael Rodriguez told the station. “She knew what she was doing when she did it, and this time she got caught.”
This is ridiculous

leaving a 2 year old in the car alone is certainly poor parenting and possibly indication of other forms of neglect
but the car being only 80 degrees and the windows were cracked makes this story not that bad...
my mom would leave me in the car in LA during the summer with the windows down all the time when I was 8 or so

One of those sweltering mid 70's days up in Jersey.

If you think it's ridiculous that the woman was charged and potentially might have her child taken away from her, I agree.
My mom left me in the car when she went in to get groceries plenty of times, never had a problem with it.

a 2 year old is way too young for this though
the kid has to be old enough to know how to roll up the windows and lock the doors if a stranger approaches or turn on the AC if they get too hot

The inside of a car can get hotter very quickly and the mother was in there for a while(she had a shite ton of groceries)
I could see going in/out for a bread/milk taking only 5-10 minutes but this wasn't the case.
ETA: How fast cars can get hot

Why not just go inside and get the mother? Breaking a window is more traumatizing than 80 degree heat.

I assume it had to be well over 80 degrees of the girl was sweating like they say. Nobody is pouring sweat and turning red from 80 degrees.

The issue isn't how hot it was at the time. The issue is that this is a helpless 2 year old that can't get out of the vehicle if the temperature increases to fatal levels. The child was obviously distraught and needed immediate attention. She was screaming and probably scared as hell. You don't leave a 2 year old in the car while you grocery shop. You shouldn't ever leave a 2 year old unattended.

This wasn't about "saving" a child, it was about getting to be a badass and shatter a civilian's window/getting some recognition on the evening news.

The distressed girl cries in the arms of the officer, who rubs her back and says, "She's soaking wet." The girl's hair appears to be matted to her forehead with sweat.

"Sweat was just coming down, almost as if someone threw a bucket of water on her, that's how bad it was," said Rodriguez.

It's unclear how long the 2-year-old girl was inside the locked car. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the temperature inside a car, even with the windows open, can jump about 20 degrees in 10 minutes.

You see a screaming, unattended 2 year old in a car and you are not going to do anything? You have no idea how long the child had been in the car or anything. You are just going to casually go into the store and find the parents?
bullshite.

There's a few things about this.
80 degrees? It got almost to that in an old rent house I used to have in the dead heat of summer mid-day WITH the central AC running because they had one vent in this huge living room.
That said, never leave your damn kids in a car, going anywhere. I'll take mine in to go to the ATM. There is no excuse for this. Kidnappings aside, too much could happen.
Also, what the hell was her problem? She brought another kid inside the store? This 2 year old must have been chopped liver. Can you imagine your sibling and mother leaving you in the car going shopping?
I have a 2 year old, he gets mad when his mother and I are in the car, and one of us gets out to go inside...can't imagine leaving him in there, and taking his 5 and 6 year old sister with me.
