A 223-foot long glass walkway that winds around part of Yuntai Mountain in China's Jiaozuo City? cracked this past Monday underneath tourists as they made their way across. The path sits about 3,500 feet above sea level. Surely there's some ground somewhere in between, but there's still quite the long way down.

Though you will see this on media and social media today...
take note.

Despite the furor the crack caused among the folks on the path, it's actually what's meant to happen. These kind of structures are designed to crack without giving way. Load-bearing glass like this tends to have several protective layers. When part of Willis Tower's Skydeck cracked last year, for example, it was only the outermost protective coating that broke. The Yuntai Mountain path can reportedly handle around 800 kilograms (about 1,764 pounds) per square meter. The all-glass suspension bridge in China is likely of similar strength.

Made in China? I don't think I'll risk it.

When they make a walking surface with glass its pretty damn thick and made with multiple pieces of glass and missile impact lamination holding them together. 1 piece of glass breaking out of at least 5 isn't gonna be a problem. You can actually stand on the lamination itself with out the glass and it would support your weight.

Like a windshield. It will crack, but won't give way.

I saw a post about this bridge earlier and noticed everybody was wearing surgical booties. I'm guessing so they didn't smudge the glass. I also saw people on their hands and knees and figured the Chinese government was probably waiting at the end with a rifle and a rag. "You go back and clean smudge!"
