Is that what that was? I was going through there about 45mins ago and could hear it. That thing is loud.

I issued a funnel cloud at MSY at 2304 Z. There was a classic supercell about 4 miles West of the airport. I got confirmation from control tower. small hail was also reported.

Well...that's the point. It's also the sirens used if there is a problem at the plants in the area including the Waterford 3 nuclear facility.

Isn't that kinda dumb to use the same siren for different situations. For a tornado you want to get down but for some kind of plant explosion you would want to get away

They are supposed to make different sounds for different things, but people have no idea what the difference is

Tornado sirens are usually a steady tone siren for 3-5 minutes, while defense sirens, in the case of a nuclear disaster, etc. are a wail tone siren. This may differ in different jurisdictions.

I was driving on the spillway when this shite went down. Scared the hell out of me with the alert going off on the radio and hail hitting my car.

Those sirens aren't there to exclusively tell you want to do, but that something is wrong.

Supposed to tune in so you can catch either the news or EAS bulletin.

BTW, tornado sirens (aka seek shelter warnings) should be a warbled alarm. Loud then quiet repeats.

Nuclear related ones telling you need to get details ASAP are a loud steady tone.

ETA: Beaten to it earlier in the thread
