Almost 11K per year just for tuition in state at LSU. That's outrageous.

Not really

Per semester:

Bama in-state T&F for 12 hours: $5,235
UGA in-state T&F for 12 hours: $5,817
UF in-state T&F for 12 hours: $6,380
Auburn in-state T&F for 12 hours: $5,348

The last TOPS report I saw showed that less than 14% of all award winners failed out completely

What percentage of bottom tier qualifiers failed out? That's the point--the top tier students are t the problem, this the bottom rung students who get free money who wind up not completing their degree.

My daughter started LSU in the fall. She had a 32 ACT and over a 4.0 gpa. She gets a small amount from LSU, a campus job(limited hours) and tops. With dorms meal plan, tuition, fees, and books it is still close to $1800 per month for this semester (5x 1800= 9000).

Jesus Christ that seems like a lot for what sounds like a great student.

My oldest is 5 years away from college. Maybe I need to start looking into how much this shite costs.

I was at LSU in the early 90's and worked to pay my way through school without help from home or student loans. It doesn't look like a kid could do that today with costs like that.

About the same, 15% at the 2 year retention rate. They are lower on the 4 year retention rate, but those folks aren't "going for a few semesters" and dropping out like is constantly asserted.

I wonder if they've ever considered making TOPS a deferred type of student loan? If you graduate, the TOPS loan is 100% forgiven. If you drop out or flunk out, you have to start making monthly payments. Could even make the % of the TOPS award that has to be repaid equal to % of hours completed towards a bachelors degree. (ie, if you complete 20% of the hours needed for a bachelor and dropout, you have to repay 80% of TOPS money received. If you finish 75% of the hours required before dropping out, then you repay 25% of the TOPS money).

Let's be honest, that line of thinking is way too complicated for LA legislature

It has never happened because TOPS' biggest opponents either think it should be another entitlement handout for the poor (and they would be disproportionately paying it back) or they think it is too costly and are opposed to saddling people who can't graduate college with debt. Sad, but true.

They should cut it all together and use the funds for merit based scholarships that are dependent on continued excellence in the classroom.
