my dad let me go to bob harmon raceway in monroe when i was 12 in 1965. Q Ball Wales' chute failed and he launched off the end of the banked return road. Dad never let me go again.

You should make it a point to do that. Not for everyone but it’s an experience unlike any other the power and sound of those cars.
You can spot the newcomers in the pits when they start one up and do a throttle whack. Lots of tears from the nitro fumes and always a few who jump a couple feet in the air at what sounds like an explosion

My brother in law and I went to the Cajun Nationals a few years back. Some dude in a drag truck S-10 asked us to help him push his truck to the starting line!
A "few" years back?

It is crazy in person.
Went to the Southern Nationals in Commerce Georgia one year. Was near the pits when they fired up one or the top fuel dragsters. I swear that thing too all the oxygen out of the air and I had to walk way so I could breath. It was amazing

I wanted to say TLDR, but that’s some legitimately interesting info.
This is crazy to me. NASCARs have 358 cubic engines and “could” produce 900hp (by rule they are capped at how much they can actually produce). So in 142 inches the dragster can produce more than 10x the HP.

One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower (11,000 HP) than the first 5 rows at the Daytona 500.

Price of nitromethane is 45-55 bucks a gallon just glad they don’t run on Benjamin Moore paint

When I get high I get high on speed
Top fuel funny car's a drug for me
My heart, my heart
Kick start my heart
Always got the cops coming after me
Custom-built bike doing 103

We went to the Houston Nationals last year and I thought the same thing. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for 30 years and they have nothing on the power of the top fuel and funny cars. It’s not comparable and I wasn’t expecting it to be.
We were standing at the fence when they got the green and it was like getting kicked in the chest. Never experienced anything like that.

Just don't hire them to coach football. Trust me on this.

When I was in Navy stationed in Oxnard California I went to the drag races once in Orange County,The top racers were there-Don “Big Daddy” Garlits,Mickey Thompson and some others I can’t remember.
It was quite impressive.
Also went to the Riverside 500 with my roommate. He was a NASCAR fan,I wasn’t.He sat there totally engrossed the whole time.
I was bored out of my mind.

telling us that if you lined up four 5 gal buckets of nitromethane, a top fuel car could burn 20 gallons before you could kick all four buckets over.
Mostly because nitromethane burns like frick just standing close to it. Just being around it is like being maced.

Many a stories involving SCD. I know way too many.
Fat Rat Russell, Baron Von Crane, Standard Motorcar company, Insurance Wrecking, Graham Brothers Engines, Zimmer Gears, that’s mostly the car racing.
Then Boat, then motorcycle racing. Back in the day.

I will always say that even if you aren't a fan of drag racing or racing in general, go to an NHRA event at least once in your life.
Absolutely this, if you get a chance to go to a NHRA event do it. It's almost indescribable.
The noise and seeing how fast they actually go in person with your own eye is totally worth it. Top Fuel cars scream by in a blink of an eye. TV doesn't do it justice. You need to see it in person if you can.
Visit the pits when you go. In between each run they tear down the engines and rebuild them. It's fascinating to watch and you can view it all within 5 to 10 ft of their trailer garage 18 wheeler rigs. It's awesome when they crank one up at the trailer and your within feet of it. The sound and vibration is awesome.

The tire is what caught my eye as well. Then when I read the facts they listed I was even more impressed.
Same tire during burnout, they elongate.
Incredible stressed these cars produce.

NHRA is an awesome sport that goes very under appreciated. Having grown up in north central Florida, I’ve gone to the Gatornationals a bunch of times. It’s awesome. I first started going as a kid in the mid 70’s when the legends were still racing. It’s come a long way since then.
Highly recommended sport.
