Titanic charged relatives of the deceased band members for uniforms

I was watching a Titanic documentary yesterday when I heard one of the most insensative things I've ever heard.
The band members who bravely played on as the Titanic was sinking in order to calm passengers, were billed by the White Star Company for the uniforms which weren't returned.
The relatives of the deceased were also told that their pay stopped the moment the ship sank.
I was sceptical as to whether this was true and found this old story from the Spectator chronicling the event from the testimony of one of the grandsons of a deceased band memeber.
For people who like this kind of stuff, you might enjoy it?

The day the Mackay-Bennett docked, Jock’s father in Dumfries received a 5s 4d bill for his son’s uniform. Jock’s pay was stopped the moment the ship went down at 2.20 a.m., and the wages owed to him were insufficient to cover the cost of the brass buttons on his bandsman’s tunic. When the family asked if his body could be brought home, they were told that ‘normal cargo rates’ would apply.

This ain't England bitch -- we get skeptical
And now we paws for sad cuteness -- dogs tied to the rail of the Titanic:
Nope, they didn't make it

James Cameron should have included this shite in his movie instead of Rose throwing her expensive necklace back into the ocean

That's one bill that I would've just said 'frick you' to and placed into File 13.

The Brits were seriously F-up with the class thing back in the day....

They should have written off those uniforms as a sunk cost.

Photo of a Titanic lifeboat taken from the rescue ship. That's the Unsinkable Molly Brown in the middle of the boat; the sailor who first spotted the iceberg is in front.
