I sure as hell hope this is not the direction restaurant's are now heading.

quote:

a separate gratuity line to checks that go straight to kitchen staff and cooks

quote:

Rather than imposing a mandatory ‘service fee’ or ‘kitchen surcharge’ as many are doing, we’d like to leave the choice in your, the diner’s, hands.

I've yet to see this fee.

Servers tip out kitchen staff all the time but I've never seen a separate line for it.

Restaurant staff are some of the boldest individuals out there. Their hourly rate is ridiculous.

I tip my server but I only "give my regards" to the chef.

The kitchen staff in general is more responsible for the quality of your experience and food, not to mention that they usually work harder than the front of the house.

ETA: I wouldn't tip more total, but I would send about half of my normal tip to the back of the house.

Do they pay the kitchen staff 2 dollars and change per hour?

Wait staff at most restaurants would hate to work for 8-10/hr.

So is it fair to give 10% to the waiter and 10% to the kitchen staff?

i dunno, if they made the same wage in the FOH and kitchen i'd likely tip the kitchen more.

i mean, where is the real skill required? serving or cooking?

Tipping is out of fricking control. I'm tired of getting the stink eye from the girl up front for not leaving her a 15% tip for doing basically the same thing the guy at the McDonald's drive-thru does. Can't we just become more European and charge a flat rate?

That probably would be better. I would tip even if both made same wage.

It wouldn't really matter, I'd just give each 10% instead of just one 20% tip

Have to love people pouring a cup of coffee and wanting a 15% tip.
