Tinting windows in your home

With spring and summer right around the corner I'm looking for ways to make my home more energy efficient. The south wall in my living room is literally a wall of windows and it lets a good amount of heat in during the day. Has anyone here had their home windows tinted and does it help?

financially isn't a huge savings- save a few $/month for the summer/early fall. But the difference in the room itself was worth it big time.

Yes and Yes. Got some tint from Lowe's and it works quite well.

I'm more concerned about the difference it makes in the room because my living room gets pretty warm in the summer. I bought this house in June last year and I'm already dreading the upcoming summer.

I would love to replace the windows but I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. I'm not a OT baller and probably would be considered dirt poor by this boards standards lol.

You should get solar screens, not tint. I have the screens on the windows that get evening sun and it makes a huge difference. With the screens you can take them off in the winter for the sun's heat.

You can order the screen material online and install it yourself. They may sell it at home improvement stores.

Yes and Yes. Also helps in reducing UV rays that can fade furniture over time. Well worth the bucks.

Just know that if you put tint on double pane windows, it voids the warranty. I learned that the hard way.

We live along the coast south of Tampa. Bought a new house that has a lot of windows and gets a lot of direct sun on the south and west sides. That means our living room and master bedroom could get pretty hot. So we had tinting put on all our windows for less than $500, since we couldn't afford new windows. The difference has been dramatic. Less glare. Less heat. Lower utility bills. A definite win for us.

There's a house near mine in Nashville that has tons of windows and they put a little bit of mirror tint on them and it looks super badass.
White, semi-modern house with awesome landscaping too so it fits.

I find that tint helps a lot with glare coming in from outside, but not with heat because it just makes the windows get so hot that you can't touch them. My preference is to install shade screens to dissipate that heat before it gets to your window glass.

If you like have natural light coming in, the film is not a bad idea. As at least one other person pointed out, the reduction in UV radiation will significantly reduce fading. If you don't mine the exclusion of sunlight, you could just go with various window treatments that will probably just as effective, if not more.

We had tint installed on south facing windows for UV protection after installing new hardwood floors, which replaced carpet.
The tint was installed by a company who dealt with solely with houses.
They knew exactly what to suggest for the type of glass in the double pane windows to avoid shattering in the summer time heat.
The edge of the tint is not visible against the frame and they had to deal with semi-circular glass at the top.

My boss had his home done but it was in conjunction with us changing out all five old A/C units for high efficiency models. He said his utility bill dropped over $300.00 a month but I'm not sure how much was due to the tint vs the higher SEER units.
