More likely that the death penalty will be abolished rather than expanded upon, and I for one am in favor of abolishment of the death penalty.

Depends. Do you think it would deter people? I absolutely don't. You look at the amount of crime when torture and public execution was standard practice and it didn't do much to deter.
Now ify you said there would be a large benefit to the public in bringing a sense of closure to heinous crimes, I'd say you would be correct.

Y'all are thinking too small on this. Lets reach a few millennia back to the Roman empire and bring back Gladiator matches for death row inmates. Might as well make it entertaining. Not to mention bring in a huge profit.
Host them during the summer (sports dead-season), pay-per-view, charge admission, concessions. The ideas are endless.

Well, adding the word "public" to it, with how society is today..times have changed, and I wouldn't be surprised if by adding public to it, some may be turned off to risking things.
We live in superficial times where ironically,..some people may would rather die, than to be publicly shamed.

Sounds like a great idea!
Except its not. Simple fact is criminals who commit most crimes only commit them because they don't think they are going to get caught.
Combine that with crimes of passion, the drug and alcohol fueled crimes, and well, simply put the death penalty does not deter anyone.

Actually, if you read why the death penalty doesn't work, you will actually see that this idea won't work either.
Add to the fact that these extreme penalties will make policing more dangerous because these criminals who don't believe they will be caught are going to be caught and then they have nothing to lose by shooting it out.
These are genius ideas guys.
Add to that the fact that the death penalty as it is now is not perfect and costs more than life in prison and we are just hitting balls out of the park. Great idea.
I think we need to bring some of you in on budget discussions about reducing the deficit.

There's no real way to put a number on these, but let's just say that in the past 20 years, 5 innocent people have been sentenced to death and actually have been killed. Do you think the death penalty is so inefficient as a deterrent that in that same 20 year period, it hasn't deterred the killing of 5 innocent people?

Sure, but it's effectiveness as a deterrent is not non-existent right? I mean, it has to deter some crime. Do you really not think that over a 20 year period it doesn't deter 5 killings?
