Thoughts on Hattiesburg area schools

Hello OT. I am a long time lurker, but this is my first post on the OT. Anyway my wife and I are planning a move to the Hattiesburg area this summer from the northshore. We have two young ones, one of which will be in first grade next year so schools are the focus of the search. I was wondering if any of you have any knowledge or opinions as to which public schools in that area are the better than others? The three we have heard so far are Sumrall, Purvis and Oak Grove. Any info on those or any others for that matter is very much appreciated.

Sumrall, Petal, Purvis. Then there is also Presbyterian Christian School. All would be good choices.

Petal and Oak Grove are good if you are going to public schools.

Oak Grove High School. Without a doubt.
And their Elementary and Middle counterparts.

Hope your kid is dyslexic.

Send your children to a boarding school far away. It builds character and they are always eager to see you during the holidays.

If going public, I would go (live in) Petal first, Oak Grove second, and Sumrall third. Private schools are PCS and Sacred Heart. I just moved from the area after teaching in a number of schools.
ETA: Hattiesburg Public should not even be an option.

Got a 3 bedroom 2 bath in a nice subdivision in Petal that I'll sell you for cheap... I moved away from there 3-4 years ago and have been renting it to the Army.

What's the housing market like in the Hattiesburg area?

For the most part, not desirable.

Why not? Seems like a nice city

I went to Rawls Springs Elementary and North Forrest High School about 15 years ago. Theyre both smaller schools compared to surrounding schools but they were pretty good when I attended.
Also frick Oak Grove, havnt forgiven those jerks for beating our rookie football team to go to the state championship back in 4th grade lol.

Do not go to OG. Way too over crowded. Sumrall is a better choice. PCS is the best school in the area.

PCS or Sacred Heart. For the win.
Oak Grove is OK by Mississippi public school standards which is faint praise in the real world.
The Sumralls and Seminarys, etc. are almost all-white rural enclaves but I wouldn't move a kid into it unless I was actually from there. Using the two church-related schools will put your kids with the children of the wolves of the community rather than with the kids of the sheeple.

Petal is an A or B if I"m not mistaken.

Petal is as good of an option in a public school as the area affords. There's still a complete qualitative difference (in my opinion) between any public school in the area and PCS or Sacred Heart.
That's Hub City (and Mississippi in general) Primary & Secondary Education RealPolitik 2015

saying its a good public school in Mississippi is equal to saying you're the tallest midget

Not true. At least, about Seminary. I worked in the district, and I wouldn't put my kid there. Nor do administrators in the central office.

Not really. Sacred Heart has fallen in recent years. Kids who move between Sacred Heart and Petal often run into trouble academically at Petal.
Petal is one of the hottest areas right now. It's a well-planned community not experiencing issues related to over-commercialization and low-rent, multifamily housing like Oak Grove, Personally, I wouldn't want my kid going to OG--unless a football player wanting to be coached by Brett Favre, maybe.
And for whomever suggested, Rawls Springs and North Forrest, you must've been gone for a while. Those schools/areas are pretty awful.
