From below, a high-dive platform resting at 58.8m looks simply high. From above? It quickens your pulse and makes you draw in your breath and wonder how anyone could survive this kind of a drop – even if it is into an 8m-deep pool of aerated water. But that’s the view Laso Schaller had as he contemplated such a leap. And he made it – setting a new world record along the way.

But that’s the view Laso Schaller had as he contemplated such a leap. And he made it – setting a new world record along the way.

The magnitude of this jump required more preparation than your standard take-a-breath-and-go waterfall jump. Under sunny blue skies, Schaller and team first built a platform to give him a clean, controlled exit, with enough projection to clear the rock wall. Secondly, they explored the area with scuba gear – and set six tanks in the pool to aerate the water and soften the landing. Finally, they did a number of rock drops – timing the landing, seeing the fall line. That said, for Laso, it’s almost the same as any old jump. “Once you get above 25m, everything starts to look and feel the same,” he says. “The only difference is the airtime.”

That air tank shite seems like cheating.

I jumped from a 40 ft cliff in Kauai and I thought my butthole exploded. No thank you

I jumped from that one too. Heard someone got killed there so they shut it down.

I see him jump off a platform suspended above a pool of water. Not off of a waterfall.
Maybe I'm too specific, but don't you have to jump off the water to actually jump off the waterfall? Seems like cheating.
Kudos to that guy though for jumping from super high up.

Which cliff was that baw? Ship Wreck Beach? I have been to Kauai 5 times and still have not done that. Taking the wife and kids out again in June and don't think I will do it this time either.

About the same as taking a fall when barefooting (barefoot water skiing.)
You need the proper equipment. He was wearing a wetsuit.

That's pretty cool although I don't understand the need some people have for this type of rush. I wouldn't jump in there from 4 feet.

Weird. What were you doing earlier before the jump?

Jumped off the causeway draw bridge one night with some buddies and broke my coxyis on the landing. Couldn't walk or sit for 2 weeks. We had a boat waiting for us.

Ouch. Hope you already had kids.

Doesn't seem like he went very deep into the water.... from that height, I would expect it to take longer to get back to the surface
