Toothpaste is a matter of personal preference. There were 3 POW's in Vietnam who were so terrified of dental decay during their captivity that they used reeds from the straw brooms that they used to sweep the floor of their hut to floss with. Nothing else. They were captive for 3 years. When they returned home, and were given a thorough medical/dental exam, they had no decay. No gum disease. Zero. So the conclusion is that plaque removal is a MECHANICAL motion and had little to do with what toothpaste you use. So I tell patients, buy the brand that will keep the toothbrush in your mouth the longest...most people just don't devote enough time to brushing. Get the flavor you like.
i don't completely agree, but again i don't have science behind me, only anecdotal evidence.
i have a terrible tartar problem; dentist says i have an overactive saliva gland.
if i dont use colgate tartar control, the tartar build up is noticeable at my 6mo checkup.
if i do, there is definitely less.
is that placebo effect at work or does this toothpaste actually help?
i am a floss-once-in-the-mornings type of person.

I love those cases!
So much fun, we love our calculus covered patients, don't we?

CAD703X...as in everything, there are exceptions. Yes, for those patients that are unusually sensitive, then of course products like Sensadine work well. For patients like yourself with high calcium content in their saliva ,then tartar control products work well. By in large, though, plaque control IS a mechanical issue...and you all are correct...most people give it one of those 20 second brush/spit/rinse things...and that's not good.

I got some tartar control toothpaste. I still got tartar, but that shite’s under control
I actually floss regularly but still get build up. Especially behind my front bottom teeth. Still have a permanent retainer wire there. I just bought a pick kit and scrape that off myself. I get gum infections very easily and have gum recession issues. I hate getting any build up because it means the next trip to the dentist is gonna suck. Teeth don't have any issues with regular everyday eating and drinking, but are very sensitive to a dentist's tools scraping at the base. I hate it.
Also, if Listerine and such isn't good for you now, what am I supposed to use. That crest pro-health doesn't work if my gums get irritated (will happen if I get drink alcohol and go to bed without brushing, and drunk me isn't orally responsible). Listerine will turn that shite around with a quickness.

I have an active salivary gland so I usually get more staining behind the lower front teeth than the rest but that's all. My DMD/PhD fiancée gave me a nice electric toothbrush several years ago and it's made brushing a full 2 minutes much easier. Her mother has severe sensitivity issues and suggests MI Paste+ in addition to sensitivity toothpastes. I use the stuff too, not for sensitivity but just to maintain good mineralization. Brush 2 minutes minimum, floss, use a tongue scraper, mouthwash, MI Paste (before bed) is my routine now.

yeah im pretty sure dentists love cases like these rather than your run of the mill shopping mom teeth cleanings/checkups.
Actually, they do.

Sure they do.
Good money in bad mouths. Then they refer to their buddy the oral surgeon

That is not plaque. Plaque is a soft bacterial film. It is calculus.

that was awful. looks like about 20 years of hardened calculus.
the dentists out here is CA are always upselling. you have the normal cleaning for around $150-200. Then they want to do the deep, below gumline cleaning for $250-400 per quadrant. Maybe i just have a bunch of tartar.

That actually looks kinda fun.

Wouldn't call it fun exactly, but it has been really cool to the the progression in all honesty.
If I knew how to post pictures on here I definitely would.
(The first one I took post-surgery is wicked.)
