Police have charged a local man with attempted murder following a shooting Friday night at a downtown Houma bar.

Gabriel Rodriguez Del Morel, 25, of Houma, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after shooting another man four times following an incident at the Downtown Balcony bar, Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis said.

Del Morel and the victim had been fighting inside the bar earlier that night before he left and retrieved a 40-caliber handgun from his car. Witnesses told police Del Morel fired several times into the air before shooting the victim, who was treated for shots to his abdomen, left leg and finger.

Del Morel then fled the bar in a Jeep Grand Cherokee but was arrested shortly afterward, Duplantis said. Del Morel later confessed to the shooting.

The victim was taken to to Terrebonne General Medical Center and was in stable condition Saturday, Duplantis said.
