Thinking about pursuing an MBA

I think it would help me in advancing my work career at the University of Alabama since I deal with Logistics and the majority of it is in business activities with the departments there besides academics and athletics. I am looking at the Online MBA program with Mississippi State.

If you want a career where you move up, leave the University, get in with a good company, work your arse off and forget the MBA.
If you want to stay at the University, an MBA isn't going to help that much.

People will tell you it doesn't matter. It does though. Go get it.

Thanks for the advice

I don't think it is ever really a bad idea to further your education...I strongly considered getting an MBA and just got busy with life and never did it...
I have to say, in retrospect, I don't think I would be any farther along in my career if I had an MBA than I am now...there are a couple of folks in my department who have them and we all pretty much do the same thing and get paid the same amount...
I'd say that if you will get some skillsets that allow you to excel in your current or future job, then go for it...however, I don't think there is much to be gained simply by having the degree...

I would only do it if your employer is paying for it. O/w I don't thinknits worth the investment unless you enroll in the full time program.

Any graduate degree is going to help if you stick with working for the state. Outside that it won't mean much.

A lot of the value of an MBA is meeting people in your classes who will go on to similar careers. I don't know how much of that you get with an online MBA. LSU has an executive MBA with classes at night and on weekends; surely UA has something like that. Wouldn't you get some sort of tuition discount as an employee?

now, I could see this as being of value...particularly in a night program that would be heavily used by current executives...

I got my MBA in 2008. If you have to come out of your own pocket for it, it's not worth it in my opinion.

An MBA had always helped the people I know that got them.

Working for UA, you don't have to pay a dime for the first class then it's 1/2 off the next class

Well, at least you're not thinking about law school. That's a start.

Graduated from SMU's full time MBA in 14. I did learn a lot and the networking is great, but I'm still debating whether it was worth it. Like some posters said, if you can get your employer to pay for it then I would do it.
SMU employees (and their kids), did not have to pay any tuition if they took classes at the school. Looks like the Gumps are pretty cheap.

I look at a few hundred resumes a year. I like it if I see MBA on there. I have to qualify that though. I only like it if the person worked for a 5+ years post-bachelors before they got the MBA. To me getting an MBA without any real world experience is pointless.

Wait. If you work at UA, why not get your MBA there?

Give me a hard worker who is interested and takes some pride in his job. We look closer at where he has worked and common interests in his field
PHDs generally are students avoiding work. Or are super quirky. They hardly ever work out good.

Yeah, it matters. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They're a lot more common now, so the immediate value to your career is not what it used to be.
But as long as you don't ring up a ton of debt its a great decision in the long run and opens doors. You average Hr director filters through 1000's of resume and MBA is still a differentiator.
