Check the Money Board sticky. A few good threads on it.

Ultimately, depending on the lease terms, it can be a good decision provided you will be buying a new car every 3-4 years. Mileage is a factor, but the comparison to financing a car with a standard loan is the same (resale value at end of X years is decreased by higher mileage).

I could do some calculations to show you that if you traded your vehicle in after 4 years or did a 4 year lease and put comparable money down, did a standard term on the retail, and put the same miles, your payment difference over that 4 years would be on average around 200 dollars a month cheaper. During that time, if you save the 200 bucks, it would be 9600 bucks. Equity.

Oh and that 200 a month would be going into an account or fund that could make you money instead of paying a bank the interest on a 40% of that money being borrowed that you're not going to use.

What's the use of having that nice new car every 3 or 4 years if you can only drive it about 30 miles per day?

It was a better day when the standard was saving for a car and driving it until it was dead.

Agreed. I won't lease again. My wife and I are going to buy an old Cruiser or Disco for her and go minimalist. Thinking about moving into the country

If having a new car every 3-4 years is your hobby, and you drive reasonable miles, leasing is a great option. It saves you money.

I don't see how that would work unless you were financing a purchase with a high interest rate loan. Most manufacturers offer some pretty attractive rates if you go through the manufacturers' finance company. Last 2 vehicles I bought were financed at 0% and 0.9%. Had one for 4 years and the one I have now is almost 5 years. I don't see how I could've came out ahead by leasing on either

Great. At the tier credit I was, I got a "money factor" of .00013 which is compare to less than 1% rate.

Dpenexs if you had 40k in the first 4 years of ownership or 98000. Either way you drive, your vehicle will depreciate accordingly though.

Why even have a vehicle? Just Uber everywhere.

I got my vehicle on August 1st. Right now it has 20,6XX.

We make well into 6 figures combined, shop at wal mart for groceries and daily needs, don't have $50 lunches and $150 dinners regularly and don't spend $300/month at Starbucks.

Who cares if we lease a brand new luxury vehicle as enjoyment to us?

Leasing a vehicle that you can write off on your taxes is not the same as what the average American family would use a lease for.
