Thinking about getting a retired greyhound for a pet.

From everything I've read they are great dogs. Supposedly, they are pretty content to be couch potatoes, once they've had their one or two walks each day.

Any of y'all have one for a pet ?

Florida is shutting down all the greyhound tracks this year, so I thought this would be a good time to adopt one.

I haven't had one but knew several people that did when I lived in FL, I thought they would be high strung but the ones I saw were pretty chill and seemed to make really good fajitas, er, uh, I mean pets, pets!!

I’ve never had one but I think it’s a great idea!

Don’t know much about greyhounds, but it sounds like you’re doing a good thing by adopting an older dog that needs a home. So props to you.

My friend got a retired racer.

It was a great dog and very sweet.

He was walking the dog in a park and a rabbit ran in front of them.

The dog pulled free and went after that rabbit.

Never saw the dog again.

Sounds noble. If it’s still relatively young it seems may need a place to run some.

I've been around a few and they seem pretty chill... Great idea getting a retired race greyhound.

The people who ran the barn when I was a kid had a few. The sweetest dogs ever, but would go after a barn cat. The rescues are doing a good job now of introducing some to cats and other small fluffy things.

They were very lazy when not chasing something

Former retired grey owner here. Not all are old. My grey was 3 or 4 when we got her. Some just don't want to chase the lure so they retire them.

Greys are awesome pets. Low maintenance couch potatoes. Walk once a day and they are good. Make sure the vet you use knows how to care for greys. They have no body fat so the anesthia and other meds can cause problems.

Would love to have a grey now but my work is too chaotic for a pet.

Lots of greyhounds will need homes. Do it!

They love to run, but only for a few minutes. Mine sleeps about 23 hours a day. They make great pets and are wonderful with kids.

My aunt and uncle adopted one in Jacksonville years ago. My uncle was outside with it off the leash when thunder struck and the dog took off running (I guess thinking it was a gunshot and he needed to race). My uncle immediately jumped in his car but couldn't catch/find him. Sad story but that was a sweet dog who always appreciated affection.

Well done adopting

I didn’t think of that. I guess most human athletes retire in their 20’s or 30’s lol makes sense that an athletic dog would slow down before they get too old.

Those buses can be a bitch to maintain, but it's worth a try.
