And why when this happens everybody freak out! It happens when that unit has a upset! Its a safety net to burn off hydrocarbons
In fairness the flare is the visual sign of an upset. PSVs could be paying off and no telling what is coming off the flare. To claim it is safe is not completely truthful.

I imagine if moths had a localized internet message board, these are the types of posts that we'd see.
We're all mesmerized by the flare.

Think of the late nigh flights coming into BTR. Gotta be a cool sight to be seen.

OT operators are busy securing their shite and will post later

You're right. It's SAFER than an exploding vessel, but it's not completely safe.
When they're working hard, burning shite can fall and it can literally rain fire. Not to mention the by products of burning some shite.

Well aware. Flaring is never a first option. Could be a shutdown for turnaround for all we know right now.

That flare is not a normal shut down operation. No way.

I got up close to it this morning. Traffic was backed up on la 1 in front of Dow so I took the river road to work. The stack it's coming out of is really close to river road. Took a pic but it's not much better than the op's pics.

Somebody might have pressed the red button

Not familiar with their procedures so I can't be as confident as you. Just saying that refineries can flare off often during controlled shutdowns; just depends on the unit.

I believe Dow had a turnaround within the last few months

Furnaces are probably down

FT, what causes flares like this? From what I've gathered in various OT flare threads, it's because they're cleaning out lines or something goes wrong and they have to burn something off instead of pumping it on down the system? Is this a correct assessment? And if so, what sort of problems go wrong to cause a backup of materials and burnoff?
In super simplistic layman's terms, is it basically chemical X goes from point A to Point B. A valve somewhere between A and B fails, and instead of chemical X reaching point B, they have to divert it to point C and burn it off?

Honestly, could be tons of things.
Would think if it was a turnaround they would have some sort if plan so they don't lose all of this "fuel" to atmosphere. However, it may be something they can't deal with elsewhere on site. Some prep work for a turnaround can have a step that sends everything to the flare header so not to compromise the process downstream. Water in a hydrocarbon system is brutal when it comes to a tower, if they are washing something there is a chance everything is being sent to flare.
Would think that it is a unit trip of some sort, heater/furnace possibly, but could be anything down to a pump or valve depending on the service or lineup. Still surprising they have no other destination for what they are burning off, but these processes are so intricate an outsider is speculating at what is happening.
Finally, again not sure what DOW processes are, they should have a flare recovery system to capture a lot of this to reuse as fuel gas. Being that it is being burned off I would say it is something that caught them by surprise or something that they can't/don't want to deal with.
Having a recent turnaround means little, one unit can be down and as soon as it comes back up another is scheduled to go down.

There was a huge crowd down river road on the levee Hurricane Isaac night. We were the only ones tonight.

I thought something on brightside was on fire that night. The whole sky was orange for miles.
Maybe the clouds amplified the flare or something, but it was ridiculous
