Facebook for the church shows it is a pretty diverse congregation. So the motivations (as sick and twisted as they are) will be a little complex to unwind.

Local reddit thread says shooter was wearing a clown mask and a cc permit holder shot the perp. Just hearsay at this point.
Edit: Metro police say the gunman shot himself after being confronted by the church member who had a gun in his car. The shooter is said to be stable.

Shooter shot himself after he pistol whipped the cc permit holder. cc permit holder has been taken to Vanderbilt for injuries.

News reports that one of the victims was the minister, Joey Spann. He was a girls high school basketball coach up until at least 6 yrs. back, here in Nashville. I was at the game where he needed AED to be resecitated after a near-fatal heart attack. This is a very good man. Pray for this entire congregation and pray for healing for the victims.
