Tropical Cyclone Pam becomes Category 5 storm, slams Vanuatu

quote:

Tropical Cyclone Pam, one of the strongest storms seen in the South Pacific in years, has made a direct hit on the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila.
quote:

Pam currently has sustained winds of 165 mph (270 kilometers per hour) with gusts of up to 200 mph (325 kilometers per hour), triggering concerns of torrential rainfall, flooding and landslides.
quote:

The archipelago nation of Vanuatu contains 83 small islands, many of which have little infrastructure and lack the strong housing structures that can endure a walloping storm. Because of the tropical climate in Vanuatu, some of the housing is made of lighter building materials, including straw and corrugated metals.

No worries, there might not be 1000 people alive that even know Vanuatu exists.

Like a big pinball bouncing off the island...

Erromango is the next island getting buzzsawed. I hope they are prepared as best as they can be.

quote:

Erromango's population at the last census in 2009 was 1,959.[41] The annual population growth rate is 2.2%,[42] and there are a total of 325 private households[43] on the island. The largest villages are Dillons Bay (Upogkor), Potnarvin and Ipota.

Just now becoming safe enough to survey damage.

Downtown doesn't look too bad....

Countryside - It's not gonna be pretty...

Only 8 confirmed dead so far... Guess they took it serious and hunkered down at the HoJo.

I noticed the clockwise spin (as hurricanes in the southern hemisphere do).

What's the worst area of the storm? I know it's the northeast quadrant here but is it a different part there?
