The "Touch Screen Generation" Rant (w/ tl;dr)

This is very telling to my generation. I feel like I'm standing by as I don't have children of my own and it makes me sad that the generation behind me isn't afforded the same type of life (by convenience and necessity) that I had.
I understand that technology is a wonderful and awe inspiring thing and I don't want to be the "Back when I was young, we...." type of guy.
But what happened to "Bike Tag", playing Army with "stick guns", neighborhood baseball/football, exploring the woods behind the Applegate's house and forming a club... and above all else, interacting with other kids and sharing experiences and life lessons with peers.
I guess it just makes me sad... I would never even imagine to tell parents how to raise their children, but I suspect that *all of my friends* with children of their own would agree that we as a collective society are failing... Obviously, it's easier to relegate children to an iPad or an iPhone... I get that.. and while I'm not a parent, I wouldn't ever presume to know and absolutely not going to 'arm-chair quarterback' anyone... but I would ask them to think critically about the 'easy' choice, versus the 'better' choice.
Again, I'm ABSOLUTELY not singling out anyone or trying to give parenting advice... There's a lot of kids what I'd love to stick a phone in front of to appease them, trust me... But I wonder how society as a whole has changed the youth of this nation. Can you parents out there honestly justify these actions blindly and not hide behind the "Don't tell me how to raise my kids!" shield?
Here's my ten cents, my two cents is free.

tl;dr: We're screwing the next generation out of life lessons, experiences, and interaction... this shouldn't be news.

Not yet, but working on it...

Hey look at it this way. It will be real easy to raise athletic kids if you have them outside all day like when we were young.

Every generation has the same thoughts as the next as far as child rearing goes.

That gay red head kid. Poor thing.

The show Black Mirror deals with this and it's really good. I would tell you to watch but I would be perpetuating the problem.

quote:Phenomenal series... I've been looking for the "Christmas Episode" online, but unable to find it..
Black Mirror
"White Bear" and the one about credits and an American Idol-esque story were super topical.

It's the 21st century brah, get over it. Hell, even most adults are addicted to electronics and their smartphones.

Yes, it tells you that time passes, technology progresses, cultures change, life is more fun today, and that video was melodramatic bullshite.

Adults, myself included, are worse than kids but that doesn't make it ok. Any parent should be all over this.

quote:100% accurate... I don't think I know a person who has kids that can argue that it's a good idea /beyond/ "Don't tell me how to raise my kids!"..

I'm sure that everyone with kids wants the best for them and are choosing an easy alternative... That's all I'm saying.
I feel like it shouldn't have to be said, because it's like preaching to the choir.

I am 40 with a 5yr old. I want him to grow up and have the kinds of fun and experiences I did. I grew up during the beginning of the computer age, the beginning and current gaming age yet I still played outside and did all the outdoors things most kids of my generation did. I want to say we had it great, and we all grew up to be well rounded adults. Our kids have the advantage of growing up in the technological age but still have us to teach them about the outdoors and adventures they can have. The chances are though, our kids will grow up having tons more fun than we did.

I understand what you are saying, and in many ways i agree.
There is nothing that can replace a good full day outdoors for a kid. Nothing. But our kids will learn differently. They will learn to code better than some adults by the time we were still learning to type really fast and beat some corny wpm count on a bulky computer desk. I think the people who think "society is failing" have been listening too much to the "we did it betters". There are these people in every generation. They think nothing could ever be as good as what they experienced because every time they remember their childhood it's recreated in their brain and given more vivid detail.
Bottom line: This generation is just different. Exceptionally different considering the incredible technology surge we're seeing. We won't do things completely right, we'll screw up just like every other generation before us. But we'll also do things better in many ways and the kids that everyone worry about being apart of the social downfall will turn out being pretty damn alright
