I thought it was hundreds of feet deep where it sank...maybe even deeper. But I do seem to remember they thought waves may have broke it in half.

correct, but the theory was the waves were so high for a split second it hit bottom..really, book presented very solid evidence...real wrath of god stuff, cats and dogs living together..seriously though, it is possible...it was carrying tons of ball bearings so it was very heavy

Interesting that it talks about the November weather coming early and being a factor. Here we are this year experiencing severe cold on/near the anniversary...
