Eh, I like the Pope. If you have to elect someone to be president of one of the invisible friend fan clubs, he seems like the right guy for the job. I mean, at least he makes people happy.

To answer the OP, in very short form:
There is a chain from Peter onward 2,000 years. Christ instituted Peter as the first pope, and there have been successors ever since. It is pretty sweet to be able to see the chain continue, and most know that it is not a position people want or dream of, but it is guided by the Spirit as to who will succeed the one before.
