The Murders of BRPD Lt. Vickie Wax and Det. Terry Melancon

I somehow ended up lost on the internet tonight and stumbled across the news articles for these two shootings. I was too young at the time to remember much about them, but after reading the reports, they seem absolutely brutal. Vickie, especially, seeing as the piece of shite shot her in the head while she was on the ground.
Vickie was killed at a Wal-Mart where the Trader Joe's on Perkins is now, and Terry was killed just down the street on Capital Heights, just across Acadian from Catholic High. I see both of those as pretty safe, nice areas of town.
For those of you who were around at the time, did those shootings shake up that area at all? They were only about a year apart. It seems like two that close together is pretty frightening, especially right after Derek Todd Lee and Sean Gillis tore up the area a couple years before.

Terry was killed on a Wednesday and buried on Sunday.
I started the Training Academy the very next day. I was 23 years old.
Been a hell of a ride ever since.

Holy hell. What a time to start the academy. How much of it did they mention to you? Or did they pretend it didn't happen?

That sounds very reasonable based on what I read. Was her killing the downfall of that Wal-Mart? Or did it move?

That Walmart was old and outdated already, not the supercenter like they all are now.

I was at LSU at the time. I had left that Walmart not ten mins before this happened.
Dude got caught trying to steal disposable cameras and ended up shooting a cop. What a waste of two lives. It really didn’t have much effect on the community that I remember other than I didn’t go to that Walmart very much after that. The Walmart on college opened a short time later.

The wal-mart drew a bad crowd the moment it opened. Yes there were students and families, but wal marts also draw in the dregs of society. Living around there, you immediately noticed the traffic on Perkins improved when the store moved onto college.
The day this incident happened, I remember a constant stream of police cars. As it began including unmarked cars and state police cars, you knew something bad occurred. The feeling I recall, was that you knew it would happen sooner or later. She was a nice middle aged lady who would greet people, when they really needed two or three guards between the parking lot, front door, and in the store during peak times.
The day Walmart moved away, the trash level around Perkins overpass dropped. And I mean literally as well. You would literally see less trash on the street from people who just opened up whatever crap they bought and threw out the bag and wrapping. I was disappointed they put in on college and tore down village square, but damn glad to have it gone near me.
The terry melacon incident is what happens when landlords let properties in decent areas get run down. Older neighborhoods always have some houses or multi-family units that have been passed down to worthless heirs or bought by a slumlord type. They let trash rent the house and dont do shite to make it better. One place I knew the landlord would even go over and do drugs with the tenants.
Like with Walmart, people I knew were shocked and saddened it happened, but not surprised. Between the garden district, capital heights, and surrounding areas, everyone knew of houses where drugs were sold, the tenants looked like jailbirds, and bad things would go down regurlarly. A set of druggies closer to me got arrested after having a shoot out. This was about 15 years ago, and you'd never think such things would go on there now.

My dad worked overtime at the same WalMart. He knew Vickie well. He was Sunday from 6-12 and she was Saturday.
What most people don’t know is the exact same scenario happened the week before. Guy tries to steal $30 worth of shite and gets confronted. My dad and him end on the ground fighting over his gun. The difference was the holster. My dad’s glock had the clip to hold the gun in which isn’t easy to get off unless you’re wearing it. Vickie still used a revolver since it was easier for her to handle and there was nothing holding it down and it fell out. Someone also came to my dads aid and helped him cuff the guy.
6 day apart. Two different assholes both willing to kill a cop for worthless crap.

Unfortunately the community forgot about Terry much too quickly because of a little storm called Katrina that rolled through like a week later.
Terry was my closest friend. That was probably the worst day of my life.

I think she was my third cousin? I didn't know her well. My mom was very close to her when they were younger. My mom was at that trial every day.

I remember both of these.
Mrs. Wax wss a detail officer at the ghetto walmart on Perkins.(was a crappy pre-supeestore Wal-Mart) .
I don't remember it being on the same level similar shootings are now.
Sadly, had the perp not shot her, he may have only gotten a citation. Lsu kids used to take bs from there all the time. The ones I knew got "misedemeanor citations".

The shooting at the Perkins Wal Mart was really sad. The victim was very close to retirement if I remember correctly.
The Wal Mart/Books A Million shopping center was getting run down. It was and still is a good neighborhood though.

Terry was about to leave BRPD and be hired on as a US Marshall. Dude was so stoked about it.

Wasn't Terry pretty new to the force?

That Wal-Mart was coined the "ghetto mart", and Capital Heights has break in crime all the time.
I wouldn't have considered either of those area safe/nice at least since the early 90s, if not earlier.
I remember seeing Officer Wax there. Never knew her like other posters here, but she seemed like a good person. Had to be tough given her job, but I could tell she was good beneath the tough exterior. That news was very sad to hear. Didn't that guy die of a heart attack shortly after sentencing?

The fact that it was generally referred to as ghetto Walmart tells you all you need to know about that store. While it is in a good neighborhood, there are pockets of hood all around it.

Yea most of those shook me up.
1. Graduated HS with Melancon.
2. My now ex-wife was roommates with Murray Pace at Millsaps.
3. I was friends with Gillis' girlfriend Terri.

Damn son.
I'd imagine anyone at LSU in the early 2000s knew of a DTL victim, seeing as he was plucking them basically off the campus.
