Why do people think a private business must offer a "livable wage" to anyone? Why is it the obligation of the business to pay a "livable wage" to anyone?

Instead I contend it should be the obligation of the individual to either adjust their spending/consumption/ expenses to the wage they are earning or instead...how about learn a new skill...learn a new trade...obtain a higher education and find a job paying a higher wage that fits their lifestyle.

The idea that some POS individual is "entitled" to a "livable wage" while also doing NOTHING to better their own circumstances is laughable.

UPDATE My attempt to inject a little levity with "Ludacris" was a bad idea. The OT can only seem to focus on that and not the content...oh well

I remember kids I knew in school that both parents worked two jobs to make a decent life for them.

Never hear about that kind of stuff today.

Joe Biden took care of the livable wage with his inflation rates.

I agree. I think it's a combo of the extreme left politics of places like Cali and the cost of living as well.

Sad to see people don't want to better themselves though. I've always thought jobs like that should be something more for highschool and college kids, unless you're someone running it.

Fast Food jobs aren’t supposed to provide you a livable wage. They’re supplemental income.

The same way that we got it in our heads that health insurance and pensions were a company's responsibility. Some companies did it as a sweetener to attract and retain the best talent, then others followed suit. Eventually, many started to think that their retirement and health care were their employer's responsibility. Don't get me wrong, I have both of those from my employer, but it should be something that a company CHOOSES to do to attract talent, not something that the government forces them to do.

Minimum wage jobs were always menial jobs that never were a path to a livable wage.

They were always a stepping stone, not an island to plant your flag on.

But, here we are, with a large percentage of our population with zero skills to move higher up the job chain.

The more time goes on, the more I'm learning that problem solving is a rare trait in more people than I realized. Accountability and a little extra effort could go a long way.

But seriously...other than some "social equity" bullshite answer and "it's for the greater good" moral position...why should it be an employers obligation instead of the individuals obligation to better themselves?

if im in a shitty spot, i should be able to sell my labor for what i see fit

Technically, that's the reason behind the origin of minimum wage; however, 100 years ago, there weren't nearly as many unskilled labor jobs like fast food. Paper routes and mowing lawns didn't count as jobs.

Things are so different today than when minimum wage was invented, but people love to hang on to that original definition and believe it should apply today, when it doesn't.
