I'm a Purple Belt in BJJ. Probably would be a Black Belt but I spent the first 3 years doing no-gi grappling so I never picked up rank. However I can tap a lot of Black Belts. Less than 3% of White Belts that start in BJJ even make it to Purple and it usually takes 2-3 years to make that rank.
This is also a legit tournament.

Doesn't progression also depend on what school, such as machado, Gracie barra, etc? I'm sure there are some slight differences in curriculum and philosophy
Posted on 9/6/16 at 1:12 pm to lsucoonass
Progression is about the same for most Gracie/Gracie Barra schools. I know several Carlos Machado black belts and they are the same. It usually takes 5-6 years of solid mat time to make black belt.

It's a huge accomplishment to win first place in a purple belt division. At Blue belt athleticism can really be a huge advantage, at purple the skill set really negates athleticism. He probably did compete in a Masters division, which is mid 30s. Still it seems he is quite legit, and would be a good training partner for most UFC/mma fighters. There are local guys that I roll with, who I see compete get second or third, and I just have no clue how they don't win first.

Agree, winning this division in Masters or not is quite a feat at this tournament.

Belts in karate are a weird thing. My little cousin is a green belt or something. I have no belt, but he wouldn't stand a chance against me. He's 9 and weighs like 60 pounds.

In an ideal setting a purple belt bjj guy (who knows no other grappling, and isn't sand bagged) should never beat a black belt
This isnt correct for a myriad of reasons. A purple belt under Marcelo Garcia is most likely going to be better than 90% of black belts from the Jiu Jitsu gyms in the old mall.
Plus maybe one guy has a nasty heel hook or omoplata and is just an ace at that one move. And if you arent keyed into defending that and worried about the kimura or some other shite he sucks at, you gonna get got.

I see your point, but is that normal for a purple belt to win or place in tournaments like this?
It seems absurd to me that a guy that would win a tournament in literally beating the other guy up is a lower tier belt than others that just know the moves but not how to use them.
At some point someone needs to say this guy is a BA because he would kick your A, not because he knows how to do every single move perfectly.

Again, there is a reason you usually hear "Guy has a ___ belt under ____". The teacher matters almost as much as the color.

Purple Belts only compete against other Purple Belts in gi. Same for Blue mostly and White although I have seen some high stripe Whites move up to Blue. Every once in a while a Brown will compete in a Black Belt division but that's usually in small tournaments where there may be only a few Black Belts. No gi is where you may get a wide variety of different skill sets where a Blue that might only train no-gi rolls with a Purple or a Brown.

Good for Spencer, did she finally stop getting plastic surgery?

Is that an impediment to training BJJ?

Just for reference, Abu Dhabi tournaments are a result of you winning a tournament at the regional level. No slaps can just compete in Abu Dhabi. Good accomplishment for him.
