Starting in 2016, travelers from four U.S. states will not be able to use their driver’s licenses as ID to board domestic flights—a pretty major development considering an estimated 38 percent of Americans don’t have passports.

The standard licenses from New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and American Samoa are considered “noncompliant” with the security standards outlined in the Real ID Act, which was enacted back in 2005 but is being implemented in stages.

I hope some of you guys enjoy forking over $100 bucks since the government wants to limit Cajun migration.

True, but people shouldn't be forced to get one. Besides, most people around here never leave the gulf coast.

Didn't we just change our licenses last year? Do the new ones still not fit security standards?

It would be against the Louisiana way to just get things done right the first time.

So this means an I.D. will also be required to vote in each state?

No. Requiring an ID to vote would be racist...

This same article and discussion comes up every year or other year near the time of the deadline from Louisiana's last requested extension to comply with the 2005 law. Louisiana will get another extension on the deadline, just like it has for the past 10 years.

Why, I'm 55 and have no intentions of traveling outside of the country, why should I need a passport?

So what is our basis for refusing to comply? Fear the gubmint will start tracking us?

What exactly are our drivers licenses missing?

The number of people that don't have a passport has to be far higher than 38%. I'd be surprised if 38% had passports.

Everyone should have a passport. However this can be easily challenged based on IDs and voting laws. Plus it hurts minorities.

More like 64% don't have them. DoS says there are roughly 120M valid passports in circulation--a little more than one for every three Americans. And many federal employees carry multiple passports. Given state demographics and economic factors, I'd imagine that residents in LA hold passports at a rate closer to 20-25%.

Get a passport card of prevail upon your government to issue a compliant ID.
