The failure and eventual surrender of the French army at the beginning of WW2 is no shock, but I had no idea about this. With the German army busy invading Poland, France launched a relatively unopposed invasion into Germany, and somehow managed to completely squander the opportunity to potentially end WW2 before it really got started. Not only that, they foolishly decided to halt the offensive and return to France. A few short months later they surrendered.

Also, this guy’s YouTube channel is fantastic if you enjoy WW2 history.

At one point, the French advance was held up all day by a single machine gun. That’s shameful

I love WW2 history, but I’ve never heard of this invasion. It’s funny that I’ve never seen a documentary on this. Another great “What If’s”, of WW2. Thank you for posting this.

And it’s no surprise so many LSU fans have French backgrounds

Yes, funny that. I wonder why they would want to erase this from the narrative?

It’s kind of crazy to think about. I’ve probably watched hundreds if not thousands of documentaries and never heard of it. The timeline has always been the invasion of Poland followed up by the invasion of France to kick off the war, so I’m perplexed how this nugget of historical knowledge has been overlooked for over 75 years. Think of the millions of lives lost thanks to French incompetence and unwillingness to take the fight to Germany

They could have delivered a knockout blow, but they let up.

Defense Minister Jean-Leslie Milles expressed disappointment that the French weren't in phase and finished second.

I know it's fun to mock the French military, but they deserve a pass after the horrors their country experienced in WW1. Nearly the entire Western front was fought on French soil.

Not mocking the French military but they absolutely do not deserve a pass. There are too many graves all over Europe filled with men from around the world who died undoing the incompetence of the French military.

I’m thinking part of there decision making on not to fully engage is due to the great losses of WW1. The French and British fought over 4 years in WW1 and I’m guessing the last thing the wanted was to commit to another Great War risking so much human life and national resources. It’s easy to say now, that the French were foolish. But in reality of that time, I can understand somewhat of why they withdrew.

Wtf happened. Napoleons soldiers were renowned for being able to march days straight and could cover twice the amount of distance on foot than any other military at the time.

Napoleon was a bad arse

Just got done listening to chapter 8 on the Revolutions podcast on the siege of Paris 1870 by Prussia. The French are so pathetic lol. They are so separated, or whatever the opposite of unified is. We are becoming the same way sadly.

Haha France sucks so funny. Everyone always shits on France for a poor performance in the Second World War but they literally have won more military battles than any other country in the world. The pretty much took over all of Europe and drove past Moscow with Napoleon and they literally stopped the Muslims from conquering Europe in the battle of Tours. They were also one of the few countries to conquer England in 1066 and they won the 100 years war as well.
