after reading some of the prices on the money board... i think the SAHM pays for itself
Generally speaking if you married an English major with a Mrs degree yes.
If they have marketable skills that required formal education working still beat being a SAHM financially.
That doesnt mean you won't catch hell for making them not be at home with the baby however.

Pretty sure Ivanka has some child care cost initiatives she wants to push through. Although im past the point of benefiting from them they are def needed.

My wife decided to stay at home once our son was born, and from seeing this and hearing daycare stories, so grateful he hasn't had to spend a day in one.

Find someone that keeps a few kids at her house. That's what we're doing with our little one. $85 per week.

$1200/mo here in houston - checked 4 different places and it's the same
it's around $750/mo for YMCA but the waitlist is extremely long.

Supply & Demand
You want to live in a society where both parents are income earners and work full time jobs? Well this is one of the side effects.

to me, it doesn't make much sense if you are paying >50% of your wife's monthly income on daycare
if you still need your wife at that point, you probably need to re-evaluate your finances
this, of course, assumes that your wife wants to stop working or has a career in which she can take a break from

Most professional moms (doctors, lawyers, and such) haven't hit their peak earning potential and still have high student loans by the time they have kids. If they don't work it severely cuts down on their earning potential and consequently quality of life through massive opportunity costs.

Yep. The left bitches about free upper education but affordable daycare would go much farther in getting people back to work. My buddy quit his job and let his wife work years ago because she made more than him and the only daycare without a waiting limit over a year was like 1200 a month at the time.

I pay 1200 a month for 2 kids. Fully accredited, insured, Cameras, properly staffed, kids love it there. I see results in counting, spelling and learning to write at age 2/3.
It's like having a second mortgage.

I pay $150/week for 2 kids. There are no frills - when I pick them up they're fed, changed, and alive - but it works for us.

Average daycare in NYC is easily over $1.5k+/month per child. For good daycare expect $2k+.

Am I to believe that daycare should cost more than freaking college?
My kids better be leaving this place with a fricking Master's Degree in Engineering.
Any reasonable places around the BR to Hammond area that educates children well and isn't trying to extort the masses?
Day cares really aren't that profitable and the teachers usually make less than $15/hour for not that easy a job.
It's a pretty expensive operation to run unless you want one teacher to take care of 10 2 year olds. Believe me you don't want that plus it's illegal anyway due to regulations about adult/child ratios for day cares. If you actually put pen to paper you'll probably see that if you want someone to take care of your child for 8 hours or more a day it's really expensive. Comparing it to college is not a good comparison.
Let's say your day care is $1000 a month. 1000/4 weeks/40 hours a week = $6.25/hour for someone to take care of your child. And that's if you are dropping them off at 9:00 and picking them up at 5:00. Most are actually there longer than 8 hours/day so the cost per hour is even lower. Do you really think you should be able to pay much less than this for someone to take care of your child?

This is our situation. My wife and I are both doctors early in our careers. We have a little girl on the way. Thank God her mom is retired and is going to move in to take care of her during the week. While the cost would definitely suck, what was more important to us was not having to worry about who was caring for our baby.
