Which was re supplied by the US Army Air Corps and successfully held Bastogne on their own. They were not "rescued" by Third Army. An eventual relief in place was conducted.

What is the conspiracy on that one? The US government pretty much knew it was going to happen, but wanted it to so the American people would be pumped up for war?

Ehhhhh...kinda sounds like a bail out to me.

Wolfhound, I seem to recall you talking about your prior service in the Army, you retired in the officer corps, correct? What unit?

1. Bulge
1a. Pearl Harbor

We had intel on both and never put it together. The Bulge buildup literally happened a couple of miles from our lines

Hell, I don't even consider the BotB to be a horrendous intelligence frick up in the first place. The Germans attacked in terrible weather, with weapons that would have generally served better purpose defensively, and with limited support resources through poor terrain. The Germans also went to great lengths to hide troop movements and keep the operation a secret. It wasn't an intelligence failure so much as the Germans successfully pulling off a surprise attack when all military logic went against it. It also was a huge failure for them in the longrun and likely contributed to the war's earlier conclusion.

While Maj. Winters was a complete badass, they definitely needed their asses saved.

The 101st was thrown into the line on short notice as the only strategic reserve in the European Theatre. Their job was to hold or die trying, and they held.

And Winters was a badass, but the point of the book was not that Easy Company was exceptional, but that they were typical and representative. There were thousands or tens of thousands of men every bit as badass that you've never heard of.

The Battle of the Bulgue was an intelligence frick up. Hitler thought one of his Generals was the leak instead of Enigma. He was assured that Enigma was unbreakable. So he bypassed OKH and OKW and sent communiques directly to the troops. Since there was no Enigma communication, and the Allies were so confident in Enigma. They refused to believe the radio chatter that a big assault was coming.

Also, they couldn't fathom why the German's would launch an attack. When the troops would be better used in defense. They thought the Germans were defeated and they would be home for Christmas.

I'm not saying that they didn't hold their ground. But outnumbered like that, they couldn't have held out forever and needed relief.

Where did you get that I was implying a conspiracy anywhere? I was simply pointing out that I thought Pearl Harbor was a larger intel failure than the Bulge.
