Begun on September 15, 1944, the men of the 1st Marine Division landed on the island under heavy Japanese fire. It was one of the most savage fights of World War II that would rage until late-November on an island only a few miles in length. Nearly 11,000 U.S. military personnel were killed and wounded in the battle. The Japanese suffered similar losses but most of theirs were killed in action.

Actual audio from the battle

I've actually been to peleliu. There are remnants of the battle from one end of the island to the other. It's a natural fortress and just a mean place

Grandfather was in the 1st Marines. They caught the back end of Guadalcanal and the brunt of Peleliu. He had not an ounce of love in his heart for a Jap the rest of his life.

He & Maw-Maw took us to the World's Fair in 84. We got to the exposition part where all the countries had their stuff set up, he saw the Japanese flag, took Maw-Maw's hand and we left.

Only foul language I ever heard from him - "I can't believe they let them fly that goddamn fricking thing here in America."

Made quite an impression on me.

One of the most useless battles the US fought in during WWII. What a waste of good men.

My father was there. Never would talk about the fighting but would share 'funny' tidbits about things that happened throughout his USMC career.

He did say many Marines were killed that never saw a Jap.

When landing, he ran to a piece of driftwood where two other Marines were using their helments to dig out a safe place. He dove in and knocked one of them over in the process. The knocked over Marine looked at him and called him by name. Was a close friend from high school. Odd.

This was one battle that should never had taken place. Waste of time and resources and life. Should have skipped over it and moved elsewhere.

The reporter had a great ability to paint the scene by describing it in vivid detail. He had to do this without the crutch of video. Takes great talent. Many of today’s reporters would have been speaking of the environmental damage and had guest on telling how the bad Marines and Navy were destroying the islands beauty and how we needed to better understand our enemies motives. Crazy amount of change in 75 years on multiple levels.

From what his son has told me of is dad, while he did have his demons from the war to deal with, he, at least as far as his son could see, dealt with them as well as could be expected. I can tell from our talks that he loved and admired his father.

His uncle (Eugene’s Older brother) also fought in the war. He was an armor officer in the 2nd Armored Division and fought in Northern Europe. He died in the 80s. He was a lot different from Eugene. He came back from the war with a lot of rage and anger issues. Because of this my friend was afraid of him as a kid and never got to sit and talk to him about his wartime experience. He knows he was highly decorated but that’s about all he knows. I believe he said he was awarded two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, and Silver Star if I remember correctly.
