I’m about to buy a 9 year old truck for 10k. It’s got 90k miles but it’s in great shape.
That's actually a really good deal. I can't find a decent sized truck with less than 150k miles for that price.

Pretty amazing under W, Obama, and Trump I was able to secure much better financing rates for new vehicles while at the same time having worse credit than I do now.

So when rates hit 17% under Reagan, was it also a representation of the administration?

When I was younger, I always thought if I worked my way into a strong salary I would buy a nice vehicle for myself.

Now I have zero interest in doing that. I make a good living and drive a paid off POS.

My wife has a 3 year old nice SUV

same.

could i go out and buy a new vehicle to match my peers at the office, sure.

do i want to, nah.

I love my paid off '09 Tacoma with 151k miles. near perfect condition. we keep wifey and the kids in a nice SUV and we travel in said SUV. my truck takes me to work. 8 miles round trip. doesn't need to be flashy or new.

Honestly learning more self-sustaining skills.

Learn how to do basic maintenance on a vehicle. DIY your house projects and don’t pursue designs that are more for social status than functionality. Separate the idea of entertainment from food and drinks. Discover new hobbies, vacations, and activities that don’t require significant payments.

These are generic ideas to start with, but the way we fix it is by avoiding debt. I think one of the biggest drivers of inflation is the perpetual use of credit. People are buying $75k vehicles on 84 month loans, and the quality of those vehicles seems to be dwindling. People opt for a $4000 refrigerator that can play YouTube on its door and then find that the mediocre warranty timeframe didn’t help at all in guaranteeing longevity of the appliance.

Remove yourself from the debt culture and you’ll find the problem seems to “fix” itself.

Can we now kill the narrative that vehicles don’t last as long as they used to?

Today’s vehicles last longer than ever

I'd love to find a clean mid-90's F250 with a 460 in it. My 2000 2V 5.4L F150 only has 82k on the clock so I will probably never have an actual reason to buy another truck.

But the dealership will look you square in the eye and offer you 50% value on trade in

That would speak to the quality of vehicles from 2011/2012 and earlier.

All good advice. I paid off my truck last year. My wifes will be this year. We are trying. But everything cost so darn much. 6 years ago I was a new cop making 41k a year and wife made 11.50 at harley. We lived comfortably.

Now she makes over 100k and we cant afford anything anymore.

That was done with a specific purpose and if you remember the rest of the 80s, it worked out pretty well.

What evidence do you have that your average 2024 vehicle is lower quality than years past?

Or is it just feelings?

Vehicles definitely last longer now than 80s-90s models. I think the jury is still out on all of the crap we put in recent models (auto start/stop, turbos etc) to meet fuel requirements.

They last longer than early 2000s, 70s and 60s models too.

Turbos have been in vehicles for like 50+ years now with a big jump coming well over a decade ago.

Auto stop/start has also been around in a large percentage of vehicles for well over a decade.

Not to say these things never create an issue in vehicles, but it’s pretty much indisputable that they don’t create the reliability problems that many falsely assume.

Yeah, to combat inflation.

You're right. That's nothing like today. Today it's just because Biden Bad.

I drive the ultimate in BAW LUXURY. Lifted, Tuned, Built, DENALI (2009 Yukon with 205k and climbing)

Everytime I think about upgrading, a quick fb market search reminds me I don't want a giant note on a newer vehicle- which would still be 5-10 years old at this point. So I take that savings, purchase some Busch Lights, and put some gas in my 25 year old boat, and live the Baw life.
