The 73 anniversary of the July 20 Hitler assassination attempt

The Nazi solider thread caused me to go back and read up on this.
BBC
Really incredible story. Shows that there can always be some good people out there caught in bad situations. Sucks the bomb didn't finish the job.
quote:
On 20 July 1944, a 36-year-old German army officer, Col Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, arrived at a heavily guarded complex hidden in a forest in East Prussia. His mission was to kill Adolf Hitler.
quote:
Though not overtly political, Stauffenberg was a conservative and a nationalist. At times, he had supported Nazi policies, but as the war progressed, his opposition to the regime grew - he was horrified by German atrocities in the east and the realisation that Germany was losing the war.
quote:
As he recovered from his injuries, Stauffenberg was approached by a group of conspirators led by Gen Henning von Tresckow, who wanted to kill Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. Stauffenberg became a leading member of the plot
quote:
The conspirators' plan was fraught with risk. Stauffenberg would carry explosives in his briefcase, through the security checks surrounding the Wolf's Lair, prime the bomb and place his briefcase near Hitler during the daily briefing. He would then make his excuses and leave the room. After the explosion, Stauffenberg would dash back to Berlin where the conspirators would use the Replacement Army to take control.
quote:
Stauffenberg saw the explosion as he left the compound to head back to Berlin. He was sure that Hitler was dead. But just before the explosion, Stauffenberg's briefcase had been moved behind a table leg away from Hitler. The bomb was not as powerful as intended and Hitler was leaning over the thick oak table looking at maps when it went off which shielded him from the blast. Four died in the explosion and many were injured, but Hitler survived.
quote:
"It was actually the next day that my mother took me and my brother aside and told me that it was our father who'd laid the bomb. I said 'How, could he do it?' And she said, 'He believed he had to do this for Germany.'"

Stauffenburg should have solicited one of those Muslim suicide bomber guys with the promise of some afterlife virgins.
History would have been changed.

There were many attempts on Hitlers life during the 1930s right until the end of WWII.
What was the actual number of attempts? IDK. I have seen some estimates of 20-25 and I have seen that there was at least 42 attempts.
Was Hitler just at the right time and place in histore' for the horrific era of WWII or did Hitler and his goons create the horrible nightmare of WWII?

Russia made WWII a lot easier for us, no matter how evil they truly were.

I think we were headed to conflict no matter what.
Vs. Germany or Russia.
Hitler/Germany may have propelled us into war at the perfect time. Pre-nuclear time.
Also Germany engaging Russia was also fortuitous as it did not allow Germany time and resources to complete their research of the nuclear bomb.
We were not far away from World War Two being much much worse

True, probably would've had to nuke them if not for Russia.

Probably so, my understanding of pre-WWII issues that the US had with the Germans and the Russians are not that great. I guess that is something I need to delve into.

Yep, we were fortunate that Nazi Germany had thei hands full with the Allies.
Einstein had warned FDR in a letter in the late 1930s that the Nazis were pursuing nukes. IDK how close Germany was to developing an actual nuke,I have read about accounts that they were weeks away toward the very end of the German surrender to the Allies.
Had the Nazis held off a few more years, they very well could have developed a nuke and most likely would have used them, probably against the Brits and perhaps the French, maybe even would have nuked the Rooskies.
Also, the Germans were very close to developing the jet plane and was very advanced in rocket technology.
If the Germans had a few more years to develop their weapons, ie nukes, jet planes and rocket technology, the world would have been vastly different that it today.

So close they got it into production.... ME-262 Swalb. (Swallow) faster than any fighter we had

Didn't Hitler have like 3,000 military/political personnel executed shortly after the failed attempt?

I don't know why but I get the distinct feeling that he was motivated more by the realization that Germany was losing the war than by the Nazi atrocities.

This is a complicated question. Certainly the groundwork for both world wars was laid by Bismark uniting the Germanic principalities in an unstable Reich that required a genius to balance it. Once Bismark was removed the German empire lurched into WWI.
The victorious allies did not recognize that modern defeated states could not be raped the way it was historically done. The humiliating, and economically punitive, peace, plus the great depression led to WWII.
It would have happened with or without Hitler. But the peculiar atrocities the Third Reich committed were strictly the result of Hitler's evil banality.
At least this is the historical consensus.

shite, the Germans were flying jets around in WWII. They flew so damn fast they were pretty much ineffective.
The lead scientist working on the atomic bomb figured out how to split the atom. Thank god he played stupid and did not reveal he had that shite all figured out.

From what I have read, the ME-262 was not really functional until late in WWII as there were still several obstacles that kept it from being a major weapon for the Nazis.
We were very fortunate that time was on our side, had the Nazis had a few more years to develop their war technology, the world would be a different place.
Interesting read from Wiki:
quote:
The Messerschmitt Me 262, nicknamed Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") in fighter versions, or Sturmvogel (German: "Storm Bird") in fighter-bomber versions, was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began, but problems with engines, metallurgy and top-level interference kept the aircraft from operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. The Me 262 was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter, including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor.[5] One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II,[6] the Me 262's roles included light bomber, reconnaissance and experimental night fighter versions.

Another fortunate twist of fate for us. Had the Nazis obtained a nuke, there is no doubt in my mind that they would have used it. Perhaps they would have used it on America. Who knows.
I believe it was the hand of Almighty God that intervened in many instances in WWII that kept certain events from happening.
If the Nazis had obtained a functional nuke, world history would much different today.
