Vehicle inspection no longer required for Texas drivers

quote:

On Aug. 5, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 3297 into law, which eliminates regular mandatory vehicle safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles.

Drivers must still pay the annual inspection fee of $7.50 but will no longer need to take their vehicle in for inspection prior to registering it. If a vehicle was not previously registered, drivers will pay $16.75 instead and won’t be required to pay the $7.50 fee for the next registration year for the same vehicle.

Only 13 other states have mandatory vehicle inspections since the federal government ended the program requirement in 1976.

quote:

“I just think it defies logic,” said Larry Harris, owner of Larry’s Auto Inspection in Houston. “If nobody is making sure the vehicles are unsafe, there’s going to be some unsafe vehicles on the street.”

Harris, who has operated his shop for 34 years, added the move would take away a large portion of his business now that drivers are no longer required to get their vehicles inspected.

My truck is going on 9 years old

I never put an inspection sticker on it

Stickers are for clowns and 5 year olds

We don't have them here and they are totally unnecessary.

I thought Texas already didn't have this.

Further evidence of the suckage level of Louisiana.

We are when it’s time to foot the bill

But we apparently also have to get approval from the state…

Seems fair

Every year the legislature tries to get rid of this in Louisiana and every year the LSP cries until it’s dropped.

Frickin LA is not opposed to keep taking people's money for this bullshite. Because I absolutely need someone to make sure my window tint isn't too dark so I can be "safe" on the highway. Just a political money grab

While I agree, I was recently stopped for an expired sticker. The deputy gave me a ticket then immediately followed up with info on how to get it thrown out once I got a new sticker. He said he’s not trying to fine me just wants my vehicle legal.

All I had to do was email a picture of the new sticker.

At least even the LEOs are trying to keep you from having to pay the fine AND the cost of the sticker.

Interesting move. I assume they are ending the mandatory emissions tests as well? If you live in these counties you're saving a lot of time and extra money over the $7.50

Designated counties include: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson.

Be careful. I did the same thing for a while back in 2002. BR Police have a hard on for that shite. If they see you on the road (which is what happened to me) they will pursue you like you robbed 5 banks and kidnapped the president's granddaughter.

Yeah, the action of required inspection is mostly gone unless you live in the most populated counties. Still have to get the emissions test.

Honest question. I drive a diesel vehicle, since this type of fueled vehicle doesn’t get emission tested. Will we still have to bring it somewhere or do we get out of it?

I've spent hundreds getting check engine light fixed so I could get an annual sticker. Vehicle runs perfect but light keeps coming on even after repairs.
Changed oxygen sensors more than once but keeps coming back to the same issue.

Don’t live in BR, but it’s pretty obvious I don’t care. There are precautions I take, but doing some repairs on older car I’m going to replace soon will be more than a ticket

If you live in certain counties with large populations this law does not apply.
