Thanks for posting this, really interesting. My company is one of only 4 Tesla resellers on Oahu. The Powerwall currently is 7kWh but actually does 6.4kWh so doubling it is much needed. Pricing is already coming down and to get 28kWh of storage with 2 batteries is great. There's much better tech coming though instead of lithium ion.

It's not a whole house replacement just yet.

The PV will feed your live load during the day and charge up the batteries. The 2 batteries will actually give you 25.6kWh for your nighttime load. That should be plenty for most people. DuPont does the roof made of solar already and they're pricing is a bit high for the efficiency so I'd imagine Tesla will be better.

if you are lucky these batteries will last 5-7 years and of course will lose capacity every year they are in service. it will be a huge cost to replace them also. you would be much better off having more panels to offset the usage than having batteries available to store the power for night time usage.

Where do you get all this from? The warranty is 10 years or 3650 cycles. But in reality they will last longer than 10 years just not at 100%. Replacement in 10 years will be much cheaper so again, not sure where you're coming from. You can have all the PV you want but without Net Metering (which ended in Hawaii and will everywhere else eventually) or storage, then your nighttime load will be bought from your utility since you know solar doesn't work at night.

wish my neighbor would have waited and gotten that instead of the solar panel monstrosities he bolted to his roof.

Lithium ion is going to be replaced by lithium sulfur battery.

No chance of fire since battey temp doesn't increase
Can discharge to 0%
10x recharge rate
Last 30 YEARS

Adequately being able to store energy and utilize it in peak conditions when demands surge is one of the biggest hurdles for so many clean energy solutions right now.

Tesla generated a profit in Q3 brah

Tesla gets subsidized something like 25k per car. So no.

And I believe the only reason they turned a profit is because they sandbagged 1q and 2q on some subsidy calculation and took an adjustment in 3q

I sit on a committee that includes many retail electricity providers. This distributed energy generation is issue number one they are all working on.

One of the interesting ideas is you convert the " free" solar energy to thermal by turning your house into an ice box during the day while you are away , and have it warm up during the 4-7 range when you get home.

Home batteries ARE the future. We will see many energy companies go out of business in the next 40 years.

They will put up a huge fight though.

It's gonna be funny to watch the environmentalists ignore just how dirty battery production is.

I think it takes 10 years of driving to a Prius vs a corolla to overcome the carbon footprint created from manufacturing one of those batteries. Too bad the battery only lasts 7.

Every time any mine is planning to open, they freak out and tweet and blog from their electronic devices (all filled with mining products).

The real issue is that the lithium required for these batteries is only found in certain places on earth, mainly Bolivia. So we'll trade reliance on foreign corrupt governments in the ME for reliance on foreign corrupt governments in South America. Mining can be a dirty business if not controlled properly. We do it well here in the U.S. but other countries do not. The environmentalists will still find a way to justify it, though.

I won't say who, but I w o r k for a major e n e r g y company that is helping them produce/develope these home batteries. They are the future, but big business is not fighting, we are pushing theses. Most major utility providers want a diverse energy portfolio. It stabilizes our profit growth.

You have the iPad Air 2? Mine was awesome but in the last month it just drains super fast. I just downloaded an update last night so I'm hoping that fixed it.
