Tennis vs Golf

I am at a loss here .. Help me to understand why golf is so massively popular in America, but tennis is an afterthought and barely anyone pays attention to it, outside of one or two huge events every year, like Wimbledon, and even then not too much… I am in my 40s and old enough to remember when tennis was a very big deal… when I was a little kid, watching John McEnroe was must see TV.. even some of the Sampras versus Agassi matches were legendary… and kids and their parents played all the time, both socially & competitively.. now, it seems as though most people in America don’t pay any attention to tennis, and yet almost everyone I know is into golf, both playing and watching it… as we all know, golf isn’t even a sport, it is a game… At least tennis requires some physical stamina and exertion… yet most seem to view tennis as a country club sport, when in fact, golf is the original country club sport… the only possible explanation I can come up with is …. Tiger Woods… Would golf be as big in America without Tiger Woods? Probably not… Maybe if we had a huge American superstar male tennis player, tennis would regain its former glory… I’ve been watching old episodes of Magnum, PI, and there are our entire episodes devoted to Thomas playing tennis on the estate… Real men, men like Charlton Heston & Clint Eastwood, used to be hugely into tennis.. What am I missing? And what will it take for tennis to become popular again ??

Can’t get wasted with the boys and play tennis. Also hot dogs at the turn

Tennis is one of those things I never think about but really like

In my experience, watching a couple of chicks play tennis is a good way to get a boner.

You can watch golf and say to yourself, "hell, I'm not any more fat and out of shape than those guys. I could probably do that." Tennis, not so much.

The only time in my life I have had food poisoning was from a clubhouse hotdog. Apparently, I did not drink enough alcohol on the back nine to kill the bacteria. Never made that mistake again... I eat the dogs I just make sure I drown any evil microbes with alcohol.

Tennis is fun, but to what extent? It’s not really fun unless you get a good rally going, which isn’t super frequent among amateur players. Your separated from your friend by like 50 feet, so not really hanging out. Plus you’re gonna be playing with the one guy every time, on the same court - not much variety. It’s fun, but not something to me that has the sustained fun of golf. (I think pickleball has solved most of those problems for tennis which is why it’s 10x more popular than tennis)
As others have said with golf it’s really just like hanging out with your friends. A group of friends would gather outdoors, consume lots of alcohol, and listen to music regardless. Now throw in the fact that you do all of those things while also playing a fun sport in between all that and it’s why is much more popular. Plus the variety. I can go play a Scottish links type course, play on the edge of the ocean, a mountain course, desert course, lakes type course. It’s just endless possibilities. Plus you play with a lot of different people. Every time I play golf I meet a new person. Just more social and more fun

I hear you, but im puzzled becuase it hasn’t always been that way.. Im old enough to remember when playing tennis (esp doubles, even though im not a fan of playing /watching doubles) was VERY social, and entire clubs and evenings were built around it…. I do see yalls point about being able to get wasted and hang out while playing golf- which just proves, to me, that golf isnt an actual sport .. i mean, i cant think of a tennis equivalent of a slob like John Daly becoming very successful .. and dont get me started on pickleball, to me it’s even worse than golf, just an absolute travesty IMO that it’s become so popular and has taken over all the tennis courts .

Guess you don’t consider football and baseball actual sports either

Because with golf you can play well despite being obese and drunk

I think it depends on where you live. Tennis is huge in most large cities in Texas with a league for just about everyone. There’s a real lack of facilities and beginner group drills in Louisiana so many people don’t learn how to play well enough for it to be fun.

It’s definitely a cult and they tend to take over.
However I know a corner high level competition tennis player that played doubles mostly, who has gotten older and he’s a competitive pickle ball player in tournaments and such. It accommodates all age ranges due to the lower impact than tennis.
I’ve always thought of pickle ball being for those who like tennis but don’t want to run as much.

The new tennis is pickleball. It's all the rage and easy to play.

If you play tennis as a hobby, it's on the same size courts, net, dimensions-every match.Very static conditions.
If you play golf as a hobby, it can be on numerous different courses, different layouts, elevations, grasstype, different pin positions on greens, weather greatly affecting ball distance & direction etc. This is why golf has been called impossible, yet it's addicting.

This moron actually brings up a good point.. it’s kinda what im trying to figure with starting the thread- if certain losers think tennis is ‘gay’ and yet golf is a sport for baws- how’d that happen ? Golf has traditionally been far more ‘elitist’ and ‘country club’ than tennis…. And watching Jimmy Conners or McEnroe or Bobby Riggs battle it out back in the day wasnt gay at all .. I guess im trying to figure out how the shift happened, and why .
