I've never been to the Asheville area . It looks like a good spot to rent a home and stay for a week in Summer. For those that have been, is it worth visiting? Are there places you like better? Tips on where to stay? In the city? Outside the city? Mountain view? Lake view? Whatchagot?

Definitely a great place to spend time with kids. We stayed in a B&B in the city last time we went, but when we go again, I'd like to stay in a mountain cabin. I'm sure you could find some great deals on AirBNB. I think i had a previous post where I listed a bunch of recs on food.

Great place for summer hiking, kayaking, craft beers (new belgium is opening a place there next year) etc.

After the Tennessee game we left for Highlands, NC for 4 days to unwind and relax. Asheville isn't far (roughly 80 miles), we were going to head over to the Biltmore but decided the 500 people in Highlands was crowded enough.

If you love the mountains but hate tourists then Ashville should be groovy enough for you.

Born and raised in Asheville. Depends on what your family likes. If you want a small town and outdoors the place go to Boone and rent a cabin. Zip lining, canoeing, hiking, mountain views. Asheville has become a popular brewery city over the last 15 years.

Asheville is a really cool city, but i don't know about it being an ideal family vacation. I think most kids would get a little bored there and would rather go somewhere else.

I think it's a great place for couples to go. Ton's of hiking, the scenery is beautiful, the Biltmore and wine, the downtown bar area. It's great for couples.

Kids won't really care that much about the Biltmore, and obviously the alcohol part, but there is a ton of outdoor stuff to do like hiking and rafting.

My personal opinion would be go there for long weekend getaway with the wife, and go somewhere else for a family vacation.

It's not that I think Asheville is bad for kids, it's just that there isn't that much about Asheville that is really for them, that I can tell. But, there is more "stuff" around Asheville than other areas in the mountains, so it is not a bad area to look at for your vacation if you just want an outdoorsy week with the family.

Take a look at the Lake Lure area. We rented a home with a boat this past summer and it was fantastic.
