and no one should have to make those kind of changes because of a bully.

There is a lot of shite we shouldn't have to do. I shouldn't have to have a house alarm, a car alarm, a gun to protect my family, etc. But I do. If a random person kept calling me every day, harassing me for no reason, I would block that number, change mine if I had to. I shouldn't have to, but I would.

It's really not. Social media/phones are a very large portion of a teenagers social life in today's world.

You may think it's silly or dumb, but it's a fact. Every kid has social media and uses it to be social with their peers.

Many times they don't until they get the call from a school administrator. Working at a school you will find parents who are shocked their child was acting the way they were towards someone else.

I once had to call a single mother and tell her that her son had sent 2780 text messages to one girl all night calling her a B*tch. Unfortunately the harassment didn't stop for several months despite the best efforts of police, parents, and school admins

When the girl showed me her phone, my mouth hit the floor at the sheer #'s of messages she received from that one guy.

Another article says that sites were started saying she was soliciting sex.

quote:

According to Vela, the harassment began more than a year ago when someone began using her picture online. “And continually posting nasty things about her,” added Vela. “Set up an account saying she was actually soliciting sex.” Then came the harassing calls.

And the Father witnessed her kill herself. Sad situation.

do you think her parents fricked up by not making her get rid of her phone/social media accounts and living as a recluse?
yes. And not having social media = living as a recluse? Jesus fricking Christ. Send her to a mental health facility, another school, move to another state...

Nothing will stop kids from being shitty. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands.

Like I said, her parents, peers, and school failed her. Nobody is blaming this on her.

Coping skills? Some of you internet hardasses are complete fricking morons. Blaming the victim and helicopter parenting instead of the scumbag bullies is ridiculous. Suggesting this is a new problem with kids flies in the face of the fact that those raised in the "good old days" are 10 times more likely to kill themselves.

Speaking of despicable acts - bullying someone and harassing them so relentlessly that they even consider suicdide.

But it's the OT, so let's focus more on blaming the fricking HS girl, who none of us can relate to her issues, for not being able to handle them

sorry but how does teaching a kid to fight back (which i agree with, btw) help in this case?

who's she going to fight if she doesn't even know who it is?

I guess I was speaking generally. Find it hard to believe she didn't know or couldn't find out who it was. But maybe she couldn't.

That's the thing. People that commit suicide aren't thinking rationally, and they often think that they are doing others a favor.

It's a terrible thing, but just think how deep of despair one feels to end their life permanently.

I don't expect people to understand it, but I can't fathom how people can just default to "selfish and despicable" when it's clear that they aren't thinking rationally whatsoever--especially when there were bullies intentionally hurting her in this situation.

Severe depression, mental health issues, or crazy painful incurable disease I can maybe start to be a little more empathetic. But because someone said mean things to you? I feel bad for her friends and family because they are the biggest losers in all this. They have to go on living after she did the most selfish thing possible in life.

Whoa.

In 2016, especially for younger individuals, it's pretty close to it.

We have no fricking idea what her parents did or didn't do. Her friends and school as well. She got her number changed, so at the least people were aware and trying to help.

No one can predict suicide and no one ever thinks it will come to that until it does. But congrats Captain Hindsight, you would've prevented it all.

It is amazing that after all the research into depression we still have people that hold these beliefs.

I said this about a previous kid that committed suicide after being bullied, but it's worth repeating.

The kids that did this need to be present and helping at the autopsy & embalming, be the pallbearers at the funeral, and dig the girls grave by hand. They should also be publicly called out and shamed throughout the ordeal and be reminded over and over that they are the reason this girl is dead.

Although I have to think if this was my little girl they'd be lucky to be able to do that without a police escort.

Just proves how out of touch they are. They yearn for the golden days when suicide rates were higher than they are now.
