CNN article from 12/1
What in the frick is this world coming to?
What in the frick is this world coming to?
quote:
randy's sister, Jackie, said she knew something was wrong when she got a text from her Tuesday saying "I love you so much, please remember that, and I'm sorry for everything." Worried something was wrong, she called her parents and grandparents. They rushed home to their house in Texas City, Texas, where they found Brandy in her room with a gun. The family pleaded with the teen not to pull the trigger. But Brandy had made up her mind.
quote:
Jackie says her sister changed her phone number and reported the bullying to police, but was told they couldn't help her. "They couldn't do anything because [the suspects] used an app and it wasn't traceable and they couldn't do something until something happened, like they fight," Jackie said. The Texas City Police department is investigating. Texas City police Capt. Joe Stanton told CNN that detectives were interviewing the family and will be contacting people the family believes are suspects. They're also following up on several tips that came in.

This may sound cold by why wouldn't she just delete the app that allowed communication?

The suspects were using an app to hide their number.

Did you read the article? She had been bullied on FB, in person, and over texting.

What drives people to be such assholes to others. I don't care how different you are from the group there is no need to rub soomeone's face in it. This seems to be worse for females and with two daughters I get where it comes from. It's just a shame that she couldn't talk it out with her parents and come to the conclusion it doesn't matter one tiny bit what the others say about you now. In five years no one will even remember any of it. smh.

Thats just horrible. As someone who was bullied when I was younger, I know what its like to hate life but damn I cant imagine what her family has to be going through to not only lose her, but witness it happen. Its amazing how relentless and shitty kids are these days with bullying. They were horrible when I was younger and its only gotten worse with social media.

It looks like the bullies used the app to remain anonymous or untraceable.
fricking terrible. Depending on age of bullies, we need to start prosecuting and punishing these kids.

It may have been an anonymous SMS service. Basically it sends regular looking text messages to a user's phone # and is not traceable without sophisticated forensic IT resources

She was getting regular texts and/or calls from an app. She wasn't using the app.
PS - and what a terrible story. Sorry for the family and what this girl went through.

1. she was getting text mesg. The person sending them was sending from an app that blocked the number or changed it.
2. Teens do not think as rational as adults
3. Sure she could have just changed her number, but again... this is a teen.
Stuff that seems so "dumb or stupid" to us is teenagers whole world. What people think of them, how they are thought of at school, etc... this is THEIR LIFE, and they think its over when everyone is talking. Its a sad situation

quote:This is an absolutely terrible story, and while the internet has created many great things, it's also created new opportunities to harass and bully people in more unavoidable ways. I think it's also made suicide a more salient option for people.

Optimistically though, schools and communities are starting to effectively address these issues. So hopefully the silver-lining (if you can call it that) is that with the internet, the more people become aware of these things, the more they will address the problems proactively.

I don't have daughters but I imagine it would be an incredibly tough sell for a parent to convince a HS aged girl that what her peers say or think about her doesn't matter in the long run. It's the absolute truth, but high schoolers don't really quite grasp that yet, can't see much past the present.

Something to take in for perspective: Social media is onlu just about to to turn 20 years old. Our society is still figuring out how to deal with it. The first generation that knows nothing but social media is basically trying to figure it out on their own.

Getting off Facebook and ignoring texts wouldn't have resolved this situation. She was being bullied by kids at school - in person - who also chose to stalk her social media, phone, etc.
Very sad.
I hope they get a confession from some of these assholes and legally throw the book at them.

mehh kids are going to be kids. Its been going on for ages... but with social media there is no escaping it now. Used to someone may talk shite about you at school or push you down or hit you in the gut when you walked by... you go home, no one even thinks about it. Now there is no escape, its all over social media, on peoples pages, twitter, etc... Just so much exposure

Damn that's terrible...for her weight? She's not any different than a million other girls out there...she's not even fat

girl had deeper issues than just the bullying IMO. Bad deal and no reason to take her own life. Sympathies to her family.
