Try turbotax. It's a breeze if your tax situation is fairly uncomplicated. It's thorough.

That's what I use, but I've purchased the $35 version the last few years since I've moved for work, have retirement accounts and what not.

Getting back about $2,500

If I get my refund back as an Amazon gift card, HR Block will give me an extra 10%. That is $250 in free money.

Seriously considering doing that. I spent $5000 with Amazon last year.

Seems like a trap to me. Did you pay state sales tax on that 5K you spent on Amazon? I'm wondering if they will try to tax the gift card next year when you do your taxes.

Got a new cpa and got more write offs. Interested to see if we'll have to pay in or we'll break even this year. Have had to shell out a couple grand each of the last few years. Which sucks a fatty

I don't know you in real life, but you come off as one stuck up, know-it-all prick on the internet.

Most people's tax-situation is different and way more complicated than using a simple tax calculator.

EIC used to be nice, but then I look back and remember the only way I got the EIC is because I made "not so much" money.

i clicked that on under deductions in turbotax this year and they laughed at me.

I still have to put in my wife's W2 with her 457 plan that usually skews things, my K1 investments (which should have GAINZ), and my 1099 from my consulting gig but so far...

While true, it doesn't change the principal (:rimshot:).

Plus, I find that people who get money back tend to have some form of outstanding debt, so that money could have go towards credit cards that may be 18% or more.

I know people who send more in for taxes so they have a savings account, per se. Because if they didn't, then they wouldn't save the money to begin with because they suck at managing. I don't really see an issue with that.

I'm the exact same in real life.

That isn't true AT ALL. Most people's tax situation is very, very straight forward and a simple tax calculator is more than enough to get them in the right place.

If your tax situation is complicated then you're either A) using a CPA who should be helping you avoid such overpayment during the year or B) you're doing them on your own which means you have a fairly significant grasp of your finances and it shouldn't take much time/effort to get your affairs in order with respect to your withholdings.

The fact of the matter is that the VAST majority of people who get back a couple thousand dollars have very straightforward taxes and are simply getting their own money back. That can be rectified by adjusting your withholdings with minimal effort. I've got no problem with someone who is too lazy or simply doesn't care to do so, but I still maintain that it is nothing that should be celebrated.

congrats on the interest-free loan you made to the government. and/or congrats on being so poor you're getting free money ("credits") at my expense.

Completely agree. I'm well aware that some people view their refunds as a savings account, and that is fine, but I still don't see why it should be celebrated.

"Hey, I can't save money whatsoever so I just leave my tax withholdings at Single and 0 so I can get a refund check and a new TV every year."

Upvotes and celebration ensue.
