I went to school in Rhode Island. When I would drive home to New York on holidays my friend would say, “ it seems like it takes forever to get out of this state.”

It took about 45 minutes. I would remind him that Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country so that statement was kind of ridiculous.

I had colleagues from 4 states that commuted daily to an 8 person Manhattan office.

Delaware is a state? I thought it was a city somewhere in yankee land.

There's a map on the quiz for you to look at, how do you forget any of them?

Delaware seems like it would be at the top of the list

The first state.

Also nobody from the northeast would forget about it.

I’m surprised by Missouri though I would have thought a less populated state.

I wondered this too. Seems more accurate to call it "States that some people can't identify on a fricking map".

I got all 50 states but I only had 2:16 left. I was getting kind of panicked. The last states I got:

46 Arkansas
47 Illinois (Chicago!)
48 Nebraska
49 Massachusetts (Boston!)
50 Vermont

If Misery hadn't been mentioned as the most forgotten, I probably would have had a hard time with that one too.

I'm surprised that after California and Texas, the next most remembered states are Washington and New York. Since they are showing you a map of the country, I would have thought that Florida would be tied with Cali and Texas as the most remembered, since it's just sticking out there like a limp dick.

I wonder how many of the misses for the New England states are just because of spelling?

Seems like AL, SC, and LA would be some of the most recognizable due to history.

A better test is this one that requires you to DRAW all 50 states.

LINK

It's harder than you think, even accounting for mouse skillz. We get used to just identifying states by their location on the map, but people can't recall their exact shapes and boundaries unless they live there or it's really unique, like Florida.

The second biggest city is named after another state.

Had to pop in the thread because this is a pet-peeve of mine:

Kansas City was a city before kansas was even a territory. That sparsely populated territory, that eventually became a state, chose to name itself after Kansas City, Missouri in an effort to cause confusion among settlers and get them to settle in kansas instead. They even eventually went as far as creating their own "Kansas City" immediately across the border from the "real" Kansas City.

Their strategy was clearly successful as it still causes confusion to this day, with many people thinking the "famous" Kansas City is in kansas. Their state literally has made a living by leaching off of Kansas City, Missouri.

A quick glance at the two Wikipedia pages pretty much sums up the drastic difference between the two. KCMO vs KCK

Just had to get that off my chest.

Only thing I learned from this quiz is that it’s been a long time since I had to spell out Massachusetts. Don’t remember the last time I actually spelled it.
