unfortunately that cancer has metastasized in this business as well, right now, to be hired as an airline pilot, it's more important to be of color or one of the "alphabets" than it is to be experienced and qualified

Yeah because that's not important or anything. What I really care about is who you like to have sex with or where your family was from 7 generations ago, not that you know how to fly the plane

I'd let you pilot a plane I'm in ANY time, as long as you have access to a couple of chilled Shiners.

This is NOT the reason why the US medical system is fricked.

Do you have any proof or validity that those chosen were not worthy of their spots?

Okay. Let’s focus on just one variable: sex.

To make things easy and simple, let’s just say that the same number of men and women applied for general surgery and they were all equally qualified. (This would give the benefit of doubt to Stanford btw. I’m not trying to hide the actual statistics, I just don’t feel like looking them up)

Under these circumstances, without any bias, running a fair match, you’d expect a general surgery residency program to match 50% women and %50 men.

Of course, you’ll have some variation. Some programs will randomly match 60/40, others 30/70, and so and so forth.

The likelihood of matching women to 11/12 spots would be 12/4,096 or 0.29%.

That’s a zero and a decimal point in front of 29, in case you missed it.

Without digging into the statistics any further, 0.29% tells you it’s more likely that bias was involved than these results occurring randomly.

This indicates Stanford general surgery residency program ranked women preferentially and discriminated against men.

So, while I couldn’t say whether or not those that matched with Stanford gen surg are qualified/deserving, it’s more likely than not that other more deserving/qualified candidates were passed over just because they were born men. And that’s the real issue here.

So if we look at other residency groups and they are predominantly male, do we have the same issue?

The new Stanford radiology class is entirely male and they took a lot of criticism in the replies.

Funny, there wasn’t a thread about it on the OT with a bunch of outrage.

Which is kind of my point.

Honestly this make me want a white male doctor more than before. If you can still get into med school and your residency with all the deck stacked against, you are definitely smart enough to treat me.

Supporting anything other than a meritocracy makes you a racist/sexist and a loser.

You are calling for affirmative action to get more males, and probably more white males into the cohort.

I’m calling for it to end because 1) yes, it’s unfair to some applicants, and 2) it creates a culture of assumed incompetence for people it’s supposed to benefit. It’s bad for everyone.

You assume the supremacy of the white male in all things. That’s your problem, bitch.

Calm down. A random sample of qualified applicants would be highly unlikely to produce the residents in that picture. That’s my point.

1. I would hate to be that dude, that sounds fricking miserable
2. Stanford didn’t chose those residents but rather for assigned them through the match process. However this would imply that they ranked very few white males competitively. Maybe white males got the bad vibes and ranked Stanford poorly.
3. 1/5 of female surgeons do not complete their surgery residency and end up dropping out. Good luck losing 2-3 residents from this class.
4. Female surgeons have the highest suicide rate of any profession in the US.

It appears radiology was also placing an emphasis on "diversity."

I explain this stuff to her and even she doesn't agree with it.
