Fellow OTers, do any of you take St. John's wort as a mood enhancer? Did it work? If so, any side effects?
Should any specific medications or alcohol be avoided while taking it?

Little known fact. St. John's Wort only works for these things when taken rectally.

Yes, it can interact with several medications from the point of causing them to be metabolized more quickly. It contains a chemical called hyperforin, which is an activator of the pregnane x receptor that is the key regulator of CYP3A4 transcription. CYP3A4 is the most important liver enzyme involved in drug metabolism. Make more of it, metabolize other drugs more quickly.

So I should avoid drinking that damn fine double IPA in your picture? They recommend taking the supplement 2 months straight or so for it to work and get in your system.

The IPA won't interact with it. Alcohol can increase the production of CYP2E1, which is why alcohol and tylenol don't pair well. There are studies that show efficacy in mood enhancement with St. John's Wort. It might be something worth trying if you weren't taking any other medications.

There's a petition to get this scheduled and made illegal, I suggest all parents sign up immediately. We need to keep it away from our children.

The toxicology report shows it was in the systems of the Columbine High School shooters, FWIW FYI.

I tried it years ago. It made me giddy, and made my head and fingers tingle.
